Worried about someone’s drinking or drug use?

It can be hard to know what to say.

You might be worried about saying the wrong thing, causing an argument, or pushing them away.

A good place to start can be:

“I’ve noticed you don’t seem yourself lately. I’m here if you want to talk.”

Try to:

• Pick a calm moment
• Avoid blame or labels
• Listen more than you speak
• Focus on what you’ve noticed
• Encourage support, but don’t force it
• Look after yourself too

You don’t have to manage it alone.

Stockton Recovery Service can support people affected by alcohol or drugs, and help people take the next step when they’re ready.

Booked your first appointment with Stockton Recovery Service?

It’s normal to feel nervous, especially if you’re not sure what to expect.

Your first appointment is a chance to talk things through. You won’t be judged, pressured or expected to have everything figured out.

It may include:

• A conversation about what’s been going on
• What support you feel you need
• Any alcohol or drug use you’re worried about
• Your health, wellbeing and safety
• What goals feel realistic for you
• What happens next

You can ask questions too.

The first step doesn’t have to be perfect. You just need to show up and start the conversation.

Not sure if you need support?

That’s okay.

A lot of people wait until things feel really difficult before reaching out. But support isn’t only for people in crisis.

You might be:

• Drinking more than you planned
• Using drugs more often than you’d like
• Feeling anxious after weekends
• Worried about money, relationships or health
• Finding it hard to cut down
• Unsure whether things are “bad enough”

You don’t need to have all the answers before asking for help.

Sometimes, the first step is just having a conversation with someone who won’t judge you.

Stockton Recovery Service is here when you’re ready.

“It’s half term.”
“It’s hot outside.”
“We’re going to a BBQ.”
“I’ve had a long week.”
“I deserve a drink.”

Sometimes the reasons can start to feel automatic.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to relax, but if alcohol is starting to affect your mood, sleep, relationships, health, family life or money, it may be worth taking a step back.

Ask yourself:

**Is this still a choice, or has it become part of the routine?**

You do not need to wait for a crisis to ask for support.

Stockton Recovery Service is here to help.

Today marks the start of **European Testing Week**.

European Testing Week encourages more people to get tested and helps break down the stigma around testing, treatment and support.

To support this, **Stockton Recovery Service** is offering free Blood-Borne Virus testing for our service users, including testing for **hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV**.

Throughout May and up to **4 June**, our team will be carrying out community outreach every Thursday to make sure anyone who requests a BBV test is seen, tested and offered the right support.

Hepatitis can be passed on in several ways, including:

• Sharing needles or other drug-use equipment, such as straws, spoons or pipes
• Medical, dental or cosmetic procedures using unsterilised equipment
• Chems*x, rough s*x, a**l s*x or unprotected s*x with someone who has hepatitis C
• Sharing personal items such as toothbrushes or razors
• Blood transfusions or organ donations before 1996

Hepatitis B and C do not always cause obvious symptoms. Some people may have no symptoms at all, while others may experience tiredness, fever, loss of appetite or vomiting.

Getting tested is the only way to know for sure. Left untreated, hepatitis B and C can lead to serious health issues, including liver damage.

We offer **free, simple and confidential testing** for hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV.

To find out more or request a test, visit **Stockton Recovery Service** during one of our drop-in times.

Today is International Nurses Day 💙

To help reduce anxiety around attending a clinical appointment, we have created a video, that gives an overview of what to expect and hopefully will help put you at ease.

Our fabulous Nursing Team have a wealth of knowledge and experience to offer.

Collectively, they deliver a variety of appointments, including:

• Titrations (To determine a stable dose of medication)
• Alcohol Assessments
• Pre‑Detox
• Buvidal
• Medication Reviews
• Comprehensive Health Screening
• Blood Tests
• BBV (Blood Borne Virus Testing)

While each appointment is different, they all follow a consistent and gentle approach. This includes taking physical observations, talking through how you’re feeling physically and mentally, discussing the reason for your appointment, exploring your motivation and goal setting.

The Nursing Team will also talk through possible next steps in your treatment journey, which could include detox support or psychological intervention groups, depending on your needs. The Nursing Team may ask some questions to support their assessment and identify how best we can support you and cater your treatment plan to suit your individual needs.

Today is Harm Reduction Day.

Harm reduction is about keeping people safer, reducing risk and making sure people have the right information when they need it.

With synthetic opioids and other high-strength substances being linked to accidental overdoses, it’s important to know the steps that can help protect you and the people around you.

Go low and slow.
Avoid using alone where possible.
Don’t mix substances, including alcohol.
Keep naloxone nearby.
Look out for the signs of overdose.
Call 999 immediately if someone becomes unresponsive or is struggling to breathe.

You can also ask your local Change Grow Live service about testing strips or use WEDINOS to check substances anonymously.

At CGL Stockton, we offer free and confidential support if you want to cut down, stop using, or just stay safer.

Booked your first appointment? Here’s what it’s actually like.

We know taking that first step can feel like a big one.

But the reality is… it’s not as intense as you might think.

It’s just a conversation.
No interrogation. No lectures. No pressure.

You won’t be forced into anything.
You can bring someone with you.
And you don’t have to commit to stopping straight away.

Feeling nervous? That’s completely normal.

We’ll meet you where you’re at 🤝

👉 If you’re thinking about reaching out, or you’ve already booked in — you’ve done the hardest part.
