Latest road safety advice from Sussex Police:

While you can’t control how others drive, you can control how you react. Here’s a few tips to stay safe around careless drivers:

* Keep your distance – if someone is tailgating, maintain a safe distance and speed to give yourself time to react.

* Be patient – if a driver is driving unnecessarily slow – yes it’s frustrating, but be patient.

* Stay alert – if you see a driver is using their mobile phone or distracted, keep at a distance and focus on your own driving.

* Stay calm – if someone cuts you up, take a deep breath and slow down to create space

Top Home Security Tips for Summer from Sussex Police

Physical Security
1. Lock doors and windows (even when it’s hot)
It’s tempting to leave windows, or back doors open in warm weather, but always secure them, especially when you’re upstairs or
out. Consider window restrictors for ventilation.
2. Reinforce entry points
Check that patio doors, garden gates, and accessible windows are properly locked. These are more frequently used in summer
and often overlooked.
3. Install motion-sensor lighting
Even with longer daylight hours, evenings and early mornings still matter. Well-lit gardens, driveways, and side entrances deter
unwanted visitors.
4. Secure garages, sheds, and garden items
Lock up tools, ladders, and bikes. In summer, these are often left out but can be used to gain access to your home.
Smart & Electronic Security
5. Use a security system or cameras
Doorbell cameras and outdoor cams are especially useful when you’re away on holiday. Make sure they cover garden areas as
well as entrances.
6. Enable smart alerts while travelling
If you’re on holiday, keep notifications on so you can monitor activity in real time and respond quickly if needed.
7. Secure your Wi-Fi network
More smart devices (like outdoor cameras or smart plugs for fans/lights) mean more need for strong passwords and updated
security settings.

Awareness & Habits
8. Don’t advertise holidays in real time
Wait until you return to post photos. Use light timers or smart plugs to make your home look occupied.
9. Ask neighbours to keep an eye out
Let a trusted neighbour know if you’re away. They can collect post, move bins, or park occasionally in your driveway.
10. Keep gardens tidy
Trim hedges and bushes so they don’t provide cover. A well-maintained garden signals that the property is occupied.
11. Manage deliveries
With more online shopping, avoid parcels piling up outside. Use a safe place, parcel box, or neighbour collection.

Personal Safety Extras
12. Store valuables securely
Use a safe for passports, cash, and jewellery, especially important during travel season.
13. Change locks if needed
If you’ve recently moved or lost keys during outings, updating locks adds peace of mind.
14. Have a holiday safety checklist
Before leaving: double-check locks, unplug non-essential devices, set timers, and ensure someone can contact you if needed.

People with asthma may find they need to use their reliever inhaler more often. Older people should also reduce physical exertion.”

Advice for the general population:

“Anyone experiencing discomfort such as sore eyes, cough or sore throat should consider reducing activity, particularly outdoors.”

Protect your home - advice from Sussex Police

Burglary can have a real impact on your personal wellbeing and sense of safety. Here are 3 tips to help keep you home secure:

1. Lock up - always lock doors and windows when you go out, even for a moment, and regularly update key safe codes.
2. Make your home look lived in - consider using timer switches, and if possible, install an alarm or CCTV. A home that looks occupied is far less attractive to burglars.
3. Keep valuables, car keys and personal items out of sight, away from windows and well hidden.

We’re here to help, but the public are our eyes and ears when we are not around so If you see or hear anything suspicious, no matter how small it may seem, please report it to us right away.
