Today is your last chance to see our show ‘Under the Same Sky’ - on view at Sandra Higgins Art, Bath, before it travels to PaintSpaces Gallery in London, opening on June 6th.

This group exhibition explores the sky as a shared, unifying presence, a space of light, atmosphere, and connection that stretches across place and experience. Expanding on earlier themes of land and water, the show brings together a rich mix of painting, drawing, and mixed media works rooted in the natural world.

Dehydration (I)
Dried mud on paper
30 x 41cm (framed)

Dehydration (I) explores the transformation of earth drying in the intense heat of the sun. All the elements play a part, the earth itself, the coastal wind, the sun’s heat, and the water mixed into the earth.

The metamorphosis and uses of earth pigment is an ongoing focus in Polly’s work.

Speculative Landscape 002 ‘Quartz’
Acrylic and oil on canvas
51 x 40.5 cm

Speculative; Adjective
1. engaged in, expressing, or based on conjecture rather than knowledge.
2. (of an investment) involving a high risk of loss.

They are also reminiscent of places; both imagined and maybe remembered from another painting, a film or writing. Some are sci-fi, some cinematic, some more realistic and some barely need enhancing at all, a readymade landscape that just needed to be framed.

NYC Skyline
Etching on Somerset Paper
51 x 86 x 3 cm (framed)

NYC Skyline, an etching made following a trip across the Atlantic, considers the interaction between sky, urban space and river. The sky’s expanse contrasts with the tightly-packed, high-density buildings. This reminds the viewer that the multitude of human experience plays out continuously under the same, ever changing, sky.

My photographic images were made after a pre-invasive breast cancer diagnosis that led to multiple surgeries, including mastectomy and reconstruction. I placed myself within rocky landscapes, especially Farleton Knott’s limestone - echoing the breast “calcifications” that raised concern and prompted me to say, “I am becoming rock.” Over months of visits, sky and stone reflected my evolving body and emotions.

Concerto 902 (detail)
Graphite
64 x 42 x 5 cm (framed)

While the insects are quiet I find myself watching the birds, returning to a moment when Starlings rose from the surrounding fields, a whisper, a breath, until the air was filled with movement. Through graphite’s special qualities - lines and dust, contact and erasure, and the slow accumulation of tone, the forms slowly emerge only to disappear.

55 x 47.5 x 3.5 cm (framed)
Organic cotton greige gauze fabric on raw canvas

Under the same sky, tides, bodies, and memories move in quiet correspondence. Wan Lin Chang’s practice traces these unseen currents through painting and textiles. In Woven Waves and related works, deconstructed fabric charts love and loss, while woven threads measure the emotional distance between earth and the moon, linking horizon to longing and gravity.

Layered Drawing (detail)
Ink on organdie
42.5 x 32.5 cm

This series of layered drawings made on hanging layers of cotton organdie express the rhythms of the breeze, currents and counter-currents observed in places ranging from rivers in France to a reservoir in the Bulgarian Balkans. Her interest lies in the way water gives visual form to the seen and unseen forces in nature, forming a connection between earth and sky.
