Birinus is a charity which, in partnership with the Archdiocese of Birmingham, enables the church to serve the wider public good, by playing a greater role in local neighbourhoods and communities. One of our current projects is the Birinus Youth Activities and Leadership Project funded by BBC Children in Need. This project was established to address the needs of young people aged 13-18 living in a
reas of high socio-economic deprivation in the city of Birmingham in particular Nechells and surrounding areas. Personal development through the Arts
It has been recognised that there is a need for free extra-curricular activities within the arts that will challenge young people to learn new skills, increase their confidence through artistic expression and facilitate their personal development, with the view to becoming more independent with a greater awareness of personal responsibility. The main aim of this project therefore is to help young people to gain life skills that will allow them better access to employment, further education and training as well as achieving their goals, aspirations and potential. What we do
We organise:
• Free workshops in dance, music and others arts.
• Free personal development programmes.
• Free taster workshops.
• Showcase Events to present the participants achievements. Free workshops
We have previously provided free workshops in African and Contemporary dance, and can offer fully qualified and professional dance instructors in local, spacious venues to suit the needs of participants. Previous professional dance instruction has been delivered by ‘ACE Dance and Music.’
Free personal development workshops
We also have experience of organising free personal development workshops for young people aged 13-18. These programmes through various activities help participants to build life skills such as communication, team work, problem solving and leadership. Through these programmes young people are supported to build their personal confidence, self-motivation and aspirations in order to realise their potential. We have previously employed the company ‘Pertemps coachright’ to deliver these programmes with great success. Free Taster Sessions
We organise free taster sessions so that potential participants can experience mini workshops and demonstrations before committing. This increases the motivation and confidence of the participants before commencing the workshops. Showcase Events
At the end of the workshops we will organise an event to showcase the achievements of the participants. This could be a dance production where the participants perform a dance routine to a live audience, or an exhibition of any visual work produced.
