They say that your school days are the best years of your life.

So, when Southwell Rotary received a letter from Grace a 10-year-old pupil at Bleasby School,
who is leaving this summer to progress to secondary school.

In the letter she told us that she had written to the Head Teacher to say she wanted to give something back and to say thank you to the school that had given her a love of reading and writing.

In Graces words

“I would really like to leave school with lots of nice things and some outside furniture.”

The members of Southwell Rotary were delighted to support Graces initiative by presenting her with a cheque towards her project.

We feel sure that the Graces legacy will be of enormous benefit to pupils following in her footsteps.

On Saturday 25th April, 26 members of Southwell Rotary Club again assisted the Farnsfield Group to raise money for Parkinson's UK through a sponsored walk 🥾of 8.5 miles.
The Club placed way-marking signs around the route to keep the 125 walkers safe and going in the right direction. Due to the very ☀️hot weather on the day the marshals also assisted a number of walkers and dogs who were suffering due to the heat. Since the walks started over £62,000 has been raised and this year it is hoped a further £5000 plus might be added to the total. Parkinson's UK

It was a real privilege to attend the presentation evening for Duke of Edinburgh Awards and see the culmination of all the effort made by the young people to achieve this prestigious award.

A year ago we had two speakers from Sam’s Workplace based in Rainworth which helps young people develop into the world of work they told us of their plans to provide access and training towards The Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

I am pleased to say that this goal has been achieved with a number of Bronze and Silver Awards being presented.

Numbers enrolled on the scheme are now over 100, they also intend to develop special courses for those with disabilities who will also be able to take part in the D of E experience.

Southwell Rotary made a grant which was used to buy equipment such as lightweight tents and cooking equipment. This equipment will be used by many groups taking part in the scheme.

The members of Southwell Rotary are delighted to have supported such a worthy cause.

This week we had a very interesting couple of speakers Lorraine Sudlow and Richard. Lorraine is from Barnardo’s and Richard is running in the London Marathon in support of this charity.

Lorraine reminded us that Barnardo’s has been helping children and young people since it was started in 1845 by Thomas Barnardo with his pledge to “Never turn a child away”.

Barnardo’s care for 356,000 children across 700 services. These include residential, exploitation, family support, mental health, and employment. This is done nationally on a local basis.

Another service is that of Supported Lodgings for young people between 16-21as they leave care. Without support their outcome could be bad. Keyworker Services support young people with learning disabilities such as autism by navigating and coordinating services. The societies Child Poverty fund in 2024/2025 spent £527k to cover urgent needs not covered elsewhere they have helped 9000 people, 2600 families and 6350 Children.

Richard who happens to be the son of one of our Rotarians along with several friends have taken up the challenge to raise vital funds to support this worthy cause. His target is to raise £2500.

Hearing about his training regime and the miles covered left us all exhausted.

We wish him all the best and will scour the TV to see if we can spot him.

Southwell Rotary support Southwell Scouts.

Following a request for help towards purchasing more robust tents to provide shelter from the elements. Our club was delighted to assist financially towards the new tents.

The photograph shows the new shelters being used to great effect by the scouts on a recent camp.

These new tents will be a great asset over the next few years helping keep the scouts protected from whatever the weather throws at them.

Our speaker last Thursday was Eddie Reads a Student at Nottingham Trent University studying wildlife conservation at the Brackenhurst Campus. He is training to take part in the Budapest Marathon on the 26th of October along with a few fellow students.
Never having run a marathon before training will be rigorous, not the least in trying to balance training with his studies and part time work.

Eddies says this is a "marathon with a mission". The mission being to raise money and awareness for the charity "Student Minds" he told us that 1 in 4 students suffer with mental health issues and the causes range from loneliness to cost of living and academic and future pressure. Some of the charities work is carried out by holding a series of workshops titled "Look after your Mate" these sessions give students an opportunity to discuss with professionals and fellow students their concerns.

The photographs show Eddie delivering his presentation to the club and the presentation of the cheque to Eddie by the club president Alan.

We all wish Eddie and his friends the best of luck and we feel sure he will succeed.
