Today the church celebrates the nativity of St John the Baptist, the great forerunner of the Lord, who came before him to prepare the way, call people to repentance, and baptise in the River Jordan. Tonight at Choral Evensong, we’ll be singing The Second Service by William Byrd, and the anthem is ‘This is the record of John’ by Orlando Gibbons, a celebrated verse anthem including extensive alto solos, which sets a passage from the Gospel of John (1: 19-23) in which John is interrogated by the religious leaders as to his identity; he denies being Christ, Elias, or the prophet, but tells them “I am the voice of him that crieth in the wilderness. Make straight the way of the Lord.” Come along and join us to hear this wonderful music! All are very welcome.

Our next Friday Lunchtime Concert takes place this week. Carla Hay will be singing music by Schubert, Elgar, Eric Coates, The Beatles, and others. She is accompanied by Graham Warner on the Piano. Refreshments are served from 12 Noon, and the concert begins at 12:30, lasting around 45 minutes. Entry is free, with a retiring collection. All welcome!

Come and join us for Choral Evensong tonight at 7pm! We’ll be singing canticles based on plainsong tones by Daniel Mansfield, and a setting of words from Psalm 42 by Herbert Howells: ‘Like as the hart desireth the waterbrooks’. This is the perfect way to end a busy day, lasting around half an hour, and all are very welcome to come along and enjoy the lovely music.

The choir returns tonight after a half term break, so come along and join us for Choral Evensong at 7pm. Tonight will see the triumphant return of Dyson in D to our repertoire, and the anthem is a beautiful setting of a prayer taken from the office of Compline: ‘Save us, O Lord’, by Edward Bairstow. We will also be singing responses by Alex Fishburn, who will be playing the organ. All are very welcome!
