'Tis the season of Christmas trees collection/abandonment.

See what we can all do to dispose of our trees correctly.

Check what your council does.

*Merton* collects from kerbsirde. You need to have your tree out by 6am on 6 January.

If you are subscribed to *Merton's* green/garden waste collection, you can chop your tree and put it in that bin.

In *Wandsworth* the trees will be collected at kerbside *from* 5 January on your usual rubbish collection day, but by a different vehicle. Collections run all January.

You can also *take your Christmas tree to a tree collection point* in Wandsworth. Our local one is at:

Here are a few broad rules to help you cut your Christmas waste:

1. Check what your council accepts both at kerbside and their recycling centres. Foil is a good example. Not all councils accept it.

2. Avoid glitter and shiny plastic packaging.

If you received presents with glitter and plastic packaging, try to keep the waste down. Anything with glitter should be put into your bin for incineration. Keep and then reuse all the plastic wrapping. That's the best thing you can do. Then recycle at the supermarkets' soft plastic recycling.

4. Do not throw batteries into your black bin. They must be recycled. Batteries are widely accepted in shops, pharmacies and libraries and by some councils.

4. Greasy paper is not accepted for recycling. It shpuld go into your black bin.

Have a more sustainable Christmas!

Together with our members, we’ve come up with a list of great sustainable Christmas products and online shops.

Most of the products we feature are fully compostable, reusable, upcycled, made from recycled materials by local artists, rescued from the beaches and rivers, or a combination of the above. Some are ptetty unique too.

Check what your council accepts at kerbside!

This is one of the best ways to improve your recycling.

Highlights for Wandsworth Council and Merton council:

♻️ Trigger spray mechanisms and pump mechanisms - attach to the bottles they came with - accepted by both councils.

♻️ Aerosols - accepted by Merton but NOT by Wandsworth.

♻️ Tubes (plastic) - toothpaste, hand cream, conditioner- NOT accepted by the councils. Specialist recycling only. Take them to Boots Putney or Boots Wimbledon Quarter.

Five hacks that will improve your recycling.

♻️ Check what your council accepts. And read the small print!

Most people haven't checked their councils' recycling provision since they first moved to their home.
Don't be like that - the councils improve their recycling all the time. You may be missing out!

♻️ Don't not "wishcycle"

Putting the wrong items into your recycling contaminate the loads, may clog up the sorting machinery, and may result in the whole load being rejected. Recycle smarter!!

♻️ Organise your waste!!

To make recycling manageable - organise how you do it.

Have bins for your council recycling, a bag for the soft plastics, and a shoe box for the other hard-to-recycle items that need specialist recycling.

♻️ Find out what to do with your hard-to-recycle waste.

Soft plastics are accepted in most supermarkets.
Pill packets can be taken to selected Boots and SuperDrug stores.
Contact lenses packaging can be taken to many opticians, including Sorcsavers.
