Just Ride Southend

05/10/2026

We were delighted to hold a "Celebration of funding" event on Tuesday 29th September with representatives of funders and supporters who had helped us secure 3 grants.

Firstly a huge thank you to everyone who plays the as we received a grant of £15,000 via Sport England and the with support from Active Essex for 2 VanRaam UK fun2go bikes, supplied by Bikeworks.
This grant and the 2 others came about following a funding fair in Southend in June this year hosted by SAVS and Bayo Alaba MP.

Massive thanks also go to recycling Southend and community fund for £1000 via to start a donated bike refurbishment scheme to service and repair bikes left at the recycling centre and those donated by the public to sell on at affordable prices to the public at our weekly sessions.

And finally and certainly not least £777 from the Finish Line Fund for 3 new upgraded bikes. We will post photos and details of this in a few weeks time as they were unable to make it.

We are very sad to hear and share this news today.
Our love and thoughts are with his family at this time 💙
James and his mum visited often as part of his rehabilitation and lots of you helped raise funds at the Ride with James event held at Just Ride Southend last year with Southend United Ex-Players Association - SUEPA

It is with great sadness that we announce that former Southend United player James Walker, aged just 38, passed away peacefully in his sleep on 19th September.
Many of you will recall that, back in May 2023, we held a benefit match for James to help raise funds for his rehabilitation after he had suffered a life-changing cardiac arrest. That day in May 2023 was just beautiful - James attended with his mum Dawn and her family, and you all supported it in your droves as did many of his former teammates.
The money raised was put to good use, and over the couple of years that followed we saw James making real progress, with him even coming back to Roots Hall to see a match on one occasion. We then, in November last year, instigated a ‘Ride With James’ campaign to help fund further much-needed rehab work, but James was unable to attend due to feeling unwell (though we spoke with him on the day), and the day after he suffered another cardiac arrest. This time, however, the event proved to be too much, and though he regained some consciousness and was able to hear, he never regained mobility.
James’s funeral will be in Southend at 1.00 pm on Wednesday 28th October. All will be welcome and there will be a wake - exact details will be released as soon as we know them.
We have grown close to James and his family over recent years and his loss is felt deeply. We will look to help them celebrate his life on 28th October, and am sure you will all join us in sending your condolences to his family and friends. RIP James, forever a Shrimper. 💙

Thank you to all those who attended and made it such a fun and successful event.
