Dementia affects nearly a million people in the UK.

At the University of Southampton, Professors Roxana Carare and Sumeet Mahajan are combining expertise in neuroscience and optical imaging to detect the disease earlier than ever before. The Institute for Medical Innovation (IMI) will foster further collaboration, helping to accelerate breakthroughs in dementia diagnosis and treatment.

This World Alzheimer’s Month, we’re sharing Clive and Rita’s story. 💜

When Clive forgot how to get to the local supermarket he’d been visiting for years, he and his wife Rita knew something wasn’t right.

Following a visit to his GP, assessment at a memory clinic and an MRI scan, Clive was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

Since then, Clive and Rita have chosen to take part in research at the University of Southampton’s Memory Assessment and Research Centre (MARC), helping researchers work towards better diagnosis and new treatments for dementia.

Clive has taken part in clinical research exploring potential new treatments for Alzheimer’s, as well as the READ-OUT study, which is investigating blood tests that could help diagnose dementia more quickly and accurately.

For Rita, taking part in research is about helping create a better future for others living with dementia.

AI is helping researchers see breast cancer in a whole new way🔬

Researchers at the University of Southampton have developed CenSegNet, an AI tool that can analyse hundreds of thousands of cells across breast tumour samples, revealing patterns that were previously difficult to detect.

The research has uncovered important links between centrosome abnormalities and more aggressive breast cancers, helping researchers better understand how tumours develop and evolve.

The findings could ultimately support the identification of higher-risk patients and more targeted approaches to treatment.

What if vaccines didn’t need to be kept in the fridge?💉

A world-first trial led by the University of Southampton has produced encouraging results for a fridge-free tetanus-diphtheria vaccine, which could transform how vaccines are stored and delivered around the world.

The findings could help improve access to vaccines in more isolated communities, while reducing the environmental impact of refrigeration. 🌍

From chef to doctor 👨‍🍳➡️🩺

A few weeks ago, Luke graduated as a doctor - a milestone he once never imagined possible.

After leaving school at 16 and spending several years working in professional kitchens, Luke made the brave decision to change career paths and pursue medicine.

As a mature student and the first in his family to attend university, there were moments when the financial pressures felt overwhelming. But through the Ignite Programme, Luke received the support and confidence he needed to continue his journey.
