JCSR Foundation

JCSR Foundation JCSR was set up in memory of our 18-year old son Jibraan who passed away in Nov 2024 due to sepsis associated with treatment of leukemia.

Our purpose is to raise and fund research to mange and treat chemotherapy-associated sepsis for patients of leukemia.

Most people fear cancer - but for patients on chemotherapy, infection is one of the most urgent and overlooked threats. A simple infection can rapidly become sepsis when the immune system is at its weakest.

On , we’re taking an important step. Together with the European Sepsis Alliance, we’ve launched a cross‑functional working group focused on one priority: Sepsis in Cancer.

Our goal is to close research gaps, raise awareness, and help protect vulnerable patients undergoing treatment. Because surviving cancer should never depend on surviving infection.

Last week in Parliament, I was honoured to support the Jibraan Chaudhary Sepsis Research (JCSR) Foundation as they brought their vital campaign to Westminster.

Friends, family and young supporters of the Foundation made the journey to Parliament to raise awareness of the devastating impact of neutropenic sepsis on patients undergoing chemotherapy. Their visit comes one year after the tragic loss of 18-year-old Jibraan, whose life was full of promise and ambition before sepsis led to multiple organ failure.

My office was pleased to send ribbons and information to all 650 MPs, and I was glad to see so many colleagues from across the House wearing the Sepsis in Leukaemia Awareness ribbon at Prime Minister’s Questions. Raising awareness of sepsis in leukaemia is so important, and it was a privilege to introduce many MPs to the Chaudhary family. Their energy, courage and determination are inspiring, and it was wonderful to see so many of the Foundation’s young supporters experience Parliament for the first time.

This week there was a debate in Westminster Hall, inspired by Parkinson’s UK, which had a great deal of focus on the need for more Parkinson’s nurses to support those with the condition. I was also at an event supporting Parkinson’s research and I am very conscious here in Romsey we have the Parkinson’s café, and a great deal of local interest. I am visiting them in January, and have had a large number of emails from local people caring for loved ones with Parkinson’s.

During my visit to Southampton General Hospital last week with Pets as Therapy I got to visit the Patient Hub and here about the work they are doing there to support patients and families being treated for a wide range of conditions. Previously much of the work of the hub had been specifically around cancer treatment, but that has now been expanded to include other conditions like Parkinson’s and MND.

I had a very quick catch up with the Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for MND, to talk about access to Tofersen. Ian Byrne has been raising that with the Minister, because there is a real postcode lottery. Some patients have been able to access it through a compassionate early access scheme, but it is not available in our region, and there are some tragic cases of young people with MND for whom it could be transformational.

We also had an awareness event for the Jibraan Chaudhary Sepsis Research Foundation, and it was great to have Jibraan’s parents here in Parliament, and numerous MPs wearing the Foundation’s ribbon in PMQs. Jibraan contracted sepsis during his treatment for leukaemia and tragically lost his young life. His family has been very determined to raise awareness and funds for more research.

Next week I am headed to Stockholm for 36 hours to attend the International Crimea Platform on behalf of Mr Speaker. This is the fourth parliamentary summit and will bring together parliamentarians from all over Europe.

However I will be here for the glorious Christmas lights switch on in Romsey. That always feels like the start of the festive period and I cannot wait to see the town all lit up, with the sprinkling of snow this week it is beginning to feel a lot like Christmas.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and sepsis remain urgent and interconnected global health threats. As part of World AMR Awareness Week, the Global Sepsis Alliance is partnering with Biotest, Menarini, and bioMérieux to host a three-part webinar series on AMR and sepsis. After opening the series with a session on diagnostic innovation and targeted therapy on November 20, we now turn to the next topic.

We are delighted to invite you to the World Sepsis Congress Satellite Session: AMR and Sepsis in Cancer Patients, scheduled for Monday, November 24, 2025, from 15:00 to 16:30 CET. This 90-minute online event explores the urgent challenges at the intersection of AMR, oncology, and sepsis, featuring leading experts, patient advocates, and frontline clinicians.

An educational grant from Menarini kindly supports this webinar.
