Our Padwell Road Day Centre enjoyed a trip to the seaside today, making the most of the sunshine, fresh sea air and some quality time together.

With more hot weather on the way this week, we wanted to remind you about Age UK's handy tips for keeping cool in hot weather!

We're heading towards another week of hot weather in the UK from 9th to 16th August, so it's important to make sure you and the older people in your life are prepared.

As we age, our bodies find it harder to adapt to more extreme temperatures, and hot weather can make some health conditions worse. We can all help keep older people safe this summer by checking in on relatives, friends, and neighbours, and offering to pick up any medication or shopping.

A little World Cup fun at Padwell Road Day Centre recently! We ran a sweepstake with our members, and congratulations to Peter, who drew Spain, and Sylvia, who drew Argentina.

Both were presented with a well-earned box of M&S biscuits as their prize!

Happy 60th birthday to our wonderful Lisa Gill, Community Enabler at Age UK Southampton!

Lisa recently celebrated this special milestone with us, and we couldn't let the occasion pass without giving her a well-deserved shout-out. Her warmth, dedication, and tireless support for the older people who come through our doors make such a difference every single day.

This Loneliness Awareness Week, we're sharing why our social activities matter so much to the people who come to them.

In the South West, 21% of older people say they don't want to burden friends and family by telling them they're lonely, and 14% often feel forgotten*. We're tackling this with services like our Padwell Road Day Centre, bringing people together for company, activities and a hot meal, and our Information & Advice service, helping people find the support they need to stay connected.

We are proud to support ! Ageism affects so many of the people we work with every day - it's time to challenge the assumptions and stereotypes that hold people back, whatever their age. 💙

🎉 It's Age Without Limits Day! 🎉

Today is all about questioning common assumptions about age and ageing, because when we question ageism, we challenge it. And the more we challenge it, the more we start to change it.

If you're looking for last minute ways to get involved, you could:
- Share one of our posts and add your own thoughts about what questioning ageism means to you, or choose an ageist stereotype (like 'can't teach an old dog new tricks') and share why you want to challenge it. ✍️
- Talk to your friends, family and neighbours about ageing and ageism! Use our handy conversation starters on our website for some prompts and questions like, 'what do we mean when we say ‘act your age‘?' and 'Why do we say ‘you look good for your age‘? Why not just ‘you look good’?' 💬
