What a busy month it's been for Begin 2 Network! 🌱🤝

September has been another month of building community connections, volunteering, developing new ideas and exploring opportunities across Southam.

From supporting Southam United FC and Southam in Bloom to exploring biodiversity projects, community activities and opportunities for local residents, there's plenty to share!

Volunteering with Southam In Bloom

🌱 It’s that time of year again! 🌸

The winter bedding has arrived, which means it’s time to start preparing the Grange Peace Garden beds and planters ready for planting.
Volunteering with Southam in Bloom, the first job is getting everything prepared — clearing out the old planting, tackling w**ds and removing some substantial tree roots that have found their way into the planters.

A trench shovel and WOLF-Garten UK w**d tools have certainly been earning their keep! 🌱

Next step — getting some winter colour into Southam! 🌼

Job well done after 13 hours of hard graft!
After 13 hours tackling the neglected car park at Southam United Football Club, clearing built-up w**ds, silt and debris from the kerb lines and around the drains, the tools are finally packed away.
The WOLF-Garten UK Push/Pull hoe, w**d hook, brush and telescopic handle certainly earned their keep on this job.
I can only imagine how back-breaking this would have been trying to tackle it all with just a shovel. Having the right tools for the job made a massive difference.
Another practical job completed while volunteering and supporting Southam United FC. ⚽💪
13 hours. Plenty of graft. Job well done!

We’re pleased to share that Begin 2 Network Services CIC has achieved the Charity Excellence Quality Mark 2026.

The Quality Mark recognises our ongoing commitment to developing Begin 2 Network responsibly, strengthening how we operate and continually improving the support and opportunities we aim to provide within our communities.
Charity Excellence describes achievement of its Quality Mark as demonstrating to funders and other stakeholders a commitment to excellence.

For a relatively new CIC that is still developing, building partnerships and turning ideas into practical community action, this is another really positive step forward.
There is still plenty of work ahead, but we're building the foundations one step at a time.

🍂 What to do in the garden this October 🌱

October is here, and while the garden might be starting to slow down, there’s still plenty we can be doing outside!

🌷 Plant spring bulbs – Now is a great time to plant daffodils, crocuses and other spring-flowering bulbs.

🥕 Keep harvesting – Pick remaining vegetables and fruit, and clear crops as they finish.

🌱 Sow and plant – Garlic, onions and hardy broad beans can be planted around this time, depending on conditions.

🍂 Make use of fallen leaves – Collect them to make leaf mould, add suitable leaves to your compost, or leave some in quiet corners for wildlife.

🐝 Think about wildlife – Don’t make the garden too tidy! Seed heads, stems, log piles and leaves can provide valuable shelter and food.

🦔 Help hedgehogs – Create a quiet sheltered area, leave gaps for them to travel between gardens where possible, and check piles of leaves before moving or burning them.

🌳 Plant for the future – Autumn is a great season for planting many trees, shrubs and hedging while the soil is still relatively warm.

🌼 Divide perennials – Established clumps can often be divided and replanted to create more plants for next year.

♻️ Get composting – Garden cuttings, suitable fallen leaves and uncooked fruit and vegetable waste can all help create compost for future growing.

🧹 Look after your tools – Clean and maintain tools as jobs begin to slow down, ready for winter and next spring.

💡 October tip: A garden doesn’t have to look perfectly tidy to be healthy. Leaving a few natural areas can make a huge difference to insects, birds and other wildlife.
