Registered charity supporting children/young people with disabilities and their families - including from BAME and asylum/refugee backgrounds - across the North East of England. New Hope North East is a registered charity, initially established in 2016 and registered with the Charity Commission in 2020. Our objective is to promote social inclusion and equal opportunity among disabled children/youn
g people and their families in the North East of England, operating under the framework of the social model of disability. While we support families from BAME communities in particular - including from asylum/refugee backgrounds - we welcome and support all families with disabled children/young people to access our services. Due to the intersectional inequalities, marginalisation and social exclusion our members experience, they face a range of barriers which prevent access to social, educational, financial, healthcare and support services โ which in turn impacts on their health and wellbeing. We aim to break down these barriers, and advocate for an inclusive world where all children are loved, valued, safeguarded, and treated equally regardless of their disability. Our organisation is unique in being the only BAME organisation in Tyne and Wear that solely focuses on supporting this portion of the community. Furthermore, as a 90% parent-carer led organisation, we do so informed by the lived experiences of our members and staff. Family Day Trips and Events - We host seasonal events and embark on inclusive family day trips throughout the year. This helps reduce isolation among our members, encourages social interaction, develops friendships with people who face similar challenges, and improves English language and communication skills.
2. Children's Activities - We provide a range of inclusive virtual and in-person activities for disabled children/young people, their siblings, and their peers. Examples include sports and games, cooking and baking, creative story writing, arts and crafts, and music and dance.
3. Parent/Carer Support - We offer one-to-one person-centred advisory meetings with our dedicated staff, to provide information and advice, signpost to relevant agencies and authorities, and guide members through applying for relevant support services. We also run a monthly Parent/Carer Support and Wellbeing Forum. This is a member-led network which allows parents/carers to connect, benefit from their shared wealth of knowledge, and discuss the challenges they face with others who understand their experiences.
4. Gardening - We have five wheelchair accessible raised beds in the Trinity Walk allotment, from which we provide seasonal gardening activities. Our group gardening sessions give families the opportunity to plant, tend and harvest a variety of vegetables - promoting healthy eating and wellbeing, social interaction, access to outdoor spaces, and developing new skills.
