🦋 The nation has spoken… and the peacock butterfly is officially the UK’s favourite!

With its bold red wings and eye-catching ‘eye spots’, this stunning species topped a nationwide vote by Butterfly Conservation – and it’s one many of us will recognise from our own gardens.

Did you know?
🌿 Peacock caterpillars feed on nettles
🌸 Adults love nectar-rich flowers like buddleia
🏡 They’re a common sight in parks, gardens and countryside across the UK

While it’s great to celebrate this beautiful butterfly, many species are struggling due to habitat loss and climate change.

Want to help? Let a patch of nettles grow, plant for pollinators, and take part in this year’s Big Butterfly Count.

Have you spotted a peacock butterfly yet this year? Let us know below 👇

✨ One was found at a previously recorded site at the south end of the hill
✨ Two were discovered at the bottom of the Craft Valley – a brand new location!

We didn’t spot any at the top of the Craft Valley this time, but it’s still early days.

A huge thank you to the Friends of Pontesford and Earl’s Hill for carrying out the survey 🙌

“Exit, pursued by a bee…” 🐝

It’s one of Shakespeare’s most famous stage directions (altered a smidge) – but what happens when we look at it through a wildlife lens?

In this fascinating blog, Dr Cath Price explores the world of bees, their importance, and how nature has long inspired our culture and storytelling. Bees and other pollinators play a vital role in keeping our ecosystems thriving, yet they need our help now more than ever.

Take a few minutes to dive into this thoughtful and entertaining read, and discover the connections between literature, language, and the natural world.

Our Senior Reserves Officer Seb joined the Shropshire Ringing Group at Clunton Coppice to ring chicks just before fledging – and together they ringed 19 chicks and 2 adult females!

Over the past few weeks, the group has been carefully monitoring nest boxes to see which species are nesting and when chicks are ready to be ringed, with a particular focus on Pied Flycatchers.

Bird ringing provides vital data on population numbers, breeding success, and the timing of key life events. This information helps us track changes, such as population declines, and put conservation measures in place to support these species.

⚠️ All birds are handled and ringed under licence from the BTO British Trust for Ornithology

It’s World Ocean Day!

“But we’re in Shropshire… why does the Ocean matter to us?”

Because there’s only one Ocean. 🌊

🔗 One huge, interconnected ecosystem
🌊 Not divided by borders (even if we learned about five!)
🙌 And every single action we take impacts it

Even here in landlocked Shropshire, what we do every day matters.
From how we dispose of waste, to the energy we use, to the food we choose — it all flows downstream.

The same challenges we see in our rivers and lakes — pollution, habitat loss, overuse — are happening on a much bigger scale in the Ocean. And those impacts come back to affect wildlife, people, and our future.

So today, we’re joining the call to say: Ocean, not oceans. Because we’re all connected.
