“The commitment by Shetland Islands Council to pursue a ‘direction of travel’ for tunnels is an important one. The development of financially sustainable, low carbon emitting tunnels is essential and will be transformational for our communities."

Shetland Islands Council has published its report on the Inter-Island Transport Connectivity Plan ahead of its meeting on 30 June.

Unst, Yell, Whalsay and Bressay Tunnel Action Groups have just received this report and will be reviewing it in detail: "Like the rest of Shetland and beyond, we will be keen to see how it is interpreted and taken forward by the Council in ways that make a tangible difference to all the communities involved, while ensuring value for everyone.”

We very much regret that, due to Shetland Islands Council not being able to provide a late ferry into Unst at 1.00 am after our event on 4 July, we have been forced to cancel.

Another example of the inadequacy of our ferry service and the need for tunnels. It is ironic that this is preventing us from raising funds to help bring forward the very thing that will make issues like this a thing of the past.

There will still be an event in Cullivoe on 4 July, but on a smaller scale, and will conclude in time for folk to catch the last ferry to Unst (the 2250 from Gutcher). Please note this ferry is bookings only, so please be sure to book well in advance. More details on the Cullivoe event will be published shortly.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Great to speak to The Guardian for today's article on tunnels between Yell and Unst and the Shetland Mainland

From Shetland to the Western Isles, campaigners argue ageing ferries are driving depopulation – and undersea tunnels are the only 21st-century solution
