Sheffield Environment Weeks

Sheffield Environment Weeks Sheffield Environment Weeks first ran in 1984 and has run every year since.

Only a few days left (31st March) if you want to nominate someone for the BBC Radio Sheffield Make A Difference awards. The environmental award is awarded to an individual or group of people who help to make where we live more environmentally friendly and better for nature.

You must be aged 18 or over to nominate someone for an award, if the person you're nominating is under 18, we ask for their parent/guardian details.

A gardener's guide to bird nesting season. 🪺

As spring arrives and and gardens burst back to life, remember that birds are busy nesting too. Nests can be well‑hidden in hedges, shrubs and trees, so please avoid cutting back vegetation during this time.

All wild birds, their nests and eggs are protected by law, so giving them space is the best way to help them thrive. By holding off on the pruning and letting nature take the lead, you’ll be giving garden wildlife the best possible start to the season.

This looks like a criminally good talk. Organised by the Wadsley and Loxley Commoners

just a reminder that this month's talk is a collaborative update on the story of Frank Fearn, the Common's most notorious villain.

We will recap the basic story of his crime, punishment and ultimate 20+ year display as a lesson to other potential miscreants. There may be some little-known details from recent research including where we believe he spent those 20+ years.

Monday, 16 March, Wadsley Church, 19:30, £3.50 members, £4.00 non-members, includes refreshments

the next Muck-In will be on Sunday, 22 March, 10:00 - 12:00, meet in the Long Lane car park. We hope to start levelling the area we have worked on all winter and sow some of the heather seed we collected last autumn.

TOAD PATROL - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
🐸🐸🐸🐸
The Redmires toad patrol is in need of more volunteers to see amphibians safely across the road. At this time of year the road by the side of the reservoir gets surprisingly busy in the evening when the toads are on the move. Apart from rescuing them from a squashy fate, there’s some useful citizen science to do in recording numbers - If anyone would like to get involved or wants to know more about it, please email: [email protected]

If you’d like your event included in the printed programme for Sheffield Environment Weeks, please make sure you submit your details by 6th March.

We welcome:
🌱 Nature, climate & wildlife events
🛠️ Volunteer tidy-ups & practical work days
🏛️ Heritage & local history activities
📅 Events already in your regular programme

Being in the printed guide is free and a great way to reach new audiences across the city.

Two events will go ahead this weekend, this time only dependent on the weather!

Sat 21 Feb, Birds in Winter - a gentle birdwatch walk with John Robinson. Meet at 9am in the Rural Lane car park. No dogs please.

Sun 22 Feb, Muck In - our regular conservation work day. Another day restoring what we are now calling the Kite Fly Field. The Rangers have removed a lot of the old knarly tree stumps since last time, so one job is to start levelling and reseeding with some of last year's collected heather seed. Meet for a 10 am start in the Long Lane car park.

Check here on Sunday morning if the weather looks rough.
