We often hear phrases like "maybe next time you should..." after someone discloses sexual violence. πŸ’

While often intended as advice, this kind of language can shift responsibility onto survivors and reinforce harmful ideas about blame and excuse the actions of the perpetrator.

Sexual violence is never the fault of the survivor. Focusing on what someone 'should have done' takes attention away from the person who chose to cause harm, and from the need to challenge the attitudes and systems that allow sexual violence to happen in the first place.

Supporting survivors doesn't always have to cost a thing πŸ’œ

There are so many simple, everyday ways that you can support specialist services like SRASAC and the survivors that we work with, from sharing a post online to challenging harmful myths and attitudes about sexual violence when you hear them.

Every action helps to raise awareness of sexual violence and make it easier for survivors to access the support they need.

If you're in a position to, you can also choose to make a small one-off or monthly donation to SRASAC - but it's not the only way to make a difference.

If you've experienced sexual violence, you might notice that certain sensations, situations or experiences can unexpectedly bring up strong emotions or memories of past trauma. These are known as triggers, and they are a normal part of how the body and brain process trauma.

We've put together some information on what triggers are and how they can show up, some ways to cope and manage triggers, and where you can find support if you need it. πŸ’œ
