🏔️ Today we’re celebrating Isabelle from Darfield Scouts! 🌟

Isabelle, aged just 8, has been nominated for the Barnsley Chronicle Young Champions Award in the Fundraiser of the Year category.

Last August, Isabelle and her dad Tom took on the mighty Mount Snowdon to raise money for Support Dogs — a Sheffield-based charity that trains assistance dogs for autistic children and adults living with epilepsy or physical disability.

We couldn’t be prouder to call Isabelle one of ours. She is kind, determined, and an absolute credit to her family, her community, and Barnsley Scouts. 🏅

Our campsite has been buzzing with energy since Sixers and Seconders from Royston, Wombwell and Pen*stone arrived yesterday. Everyone’s settled in for another night on site, and even with the mixed weather it’s been a fun, lively and memorable weekend all round.

They’ll be closing camp tomorrow, but it’s been fantastic having you all here — thanks for bringing such great spirit to Silverwood.

We are looking forward to supporting this event in a few weeks time taking place in the chapel.

The history of Silverwood is truly special and it is important we remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

If you wish to join us, please arrive by 7pm. We look forward to seeing you there.

Today we’re wrapping up our volunteer spotlight series by celebrating an incredible husband‑and‑wife team who volunteer side by side to make Scouting brilliant for young people in Barnsley.

For Tim and Verity, volunteering is simply fun — and something that grew naturally as all three of their children joined the movement. They love being a family within the wider Scouting family.

They told us that helping out adds so much positivity to their “dinner‑table talk”. They chat about what they’ve done, what’s coming up, and even get ideas from the kids for future sessions. It’s a real team effort.

Together, they say being a Scouting family feels like “our team working together for each other and the community”. And they couldn’t be happier that they chose to volunteer.

Thank you, Tim and Verity! 💛

Another group of volunteers who go above and beyond — our incredible Duke of Edinburgh team. 🥾🌟

While many of our volunteers give their time to weekly section meetings, this amazing group give up even more to support young people aged 13.5 to 25 in completing their D of E awards across the district.

The award has several elements completed independently — but the expedition section is a real team effort. Our D of E volunteers train, mentor, supervise and assess participants every step of the way. And we mean that literally — from teaching navigation, what to pack and what to eat, to supervising and assessing teams out on the hills, and then cleaning, drying and repairing kit once everyone’s safely back.

Together, this team have supported hundreds of young people to complete their Bronze, Silver and Gold awards — achievements that also count towards the top Scout awards. That’s hundreds of young people with life skills, resilience, and adventures they’ll never forget.

A huge thank you to each and every one of them: Alison, Jamie, Joe, Sharon, Ryan, Peter, Tony (and Gruff!), Vic and Malc 🙌

If you’re interested in joining the D of E volunteer team, get in touch with Alison at [email protected] 💛

Behind every thriving Scout group, there’s a volunteer working quietly in the background to make sure everything runs safely and sustainably. Today we’re shining a light on that vital role. 👇

Meet Janet — Chair of the Board of Trustees at Pen*stone Scouts.

Together with her fellow trustees, Janet shapes and approves the strategy for the group, ensuring it operates in a safe, compliant manner. It’s not a role you’ll always see at the front of a session — but without it, none of what happens at the front would be possible.

“Scouting offers a sense of community and a safe place for young people to grow, meet challenges, and gain vital life skills. None of this is possible without the fantastic leaders and volunteers who give up their time every week to run the activities for each section.”

And Janet is clear on why she does it: volunteering in any capacity — whether as a trustee or a section leader — gives back to the local community, the scouting community, and most importantly, the young people at the heart of it all.

Thank you, Janet. 💛

Barnsley Scouts at the Barnsley CVS Volunteer Day! 🌟

This week we’ve been celebrating our incredible volunteers here on the page — and we also took the celebration out into the community!

We were proud to be at the Barnsley CVS Volunteer Day yesterday at the Civic Centre, flying the flag for Barnsley Scouts and spreading the word about the amazing volunteering opportunities across our district.

If you stopped by our stand — hello! 👋 And if you didn’t but you’re curious about what volunteering with Barnsley Scouts looks like, keep following along this week as we share more stories from our brilliant volunteers.

There’s a role for everyone. Come and make a difference. 💛

Youth leadership is a huge part of Scouting. Today we’re highlighting one of our Youth Leads.

🌟 Meet Sophie — District Youth Lead for Barnsley Scouts🌟

Sophie’s scouting story didn’t end when she grew up — it evolved. Having experienced the adventures, friendships and opportunities that Scouts gave her as a young person, she made a deliberate choice: to come back as an adult volunteer and make sure the next generation gets those same chances.

“I chose to be an adult volunteer to hopefully allow young people to have the opportunities I had through my scouting journey — offering them a chance to enjoy new adventures, and to extend my own time in the movement in an active, hands-on way.”

More recently, Sophie stepped up to take on the District Youth Lead role — a position that gives young volunteers a voice in shaping scouting at a wider level. It’s a relatively new role for her, but she’s already clear on why it matters: young people aren’t just participants in Scouts. They can genuinely lead it.

Through her time as a leader, Sophie has built real skills — confidence, communication, teamwork, and the ability to connect with young people in meaningful ways. And she’s taking those forward with a clear vision: championing youth-focused ideas and development, while respecting the experience and wisdom of those who’ve walked the path before her.

Thank you, Sophie. 💛
