For Nature Connect last week we took the young people to Bug Fest at the Botanical Gardens where we got to talk to scientists about their research and had a blast learning about all sorts of weird and wonderful bugs! 🐛

We are proud to once again host International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia this year on behalf of Sheffield City Council.

The event will feature a range of guest speakers, including speeches, poetry readings, and musical performances. We warmly invite you to attend and show your support.

Over Easter, our Nature Connect group headed to Endcliffe Park for a bat walk with the South Yorkshire Bat Group. We learned about the different species in the area and were lucky enough to spot some Daubenton’s bats!

This month for Nature Connect, we took young people to Ecclesall Woods to discover transness in prehistory with the wonderful SK Marley. We explored how gender binaries weren’t always so fixed in ancient times.

Last month, we visited Wardsend Cemetery with our young people. During the visit, we created mono prints using the gravestones, drew designs for a future mural, enjoyed birdwatching along the river, and learned about some of the cemetery’s fascinating residents with Meghan Tipping.

Last month we had the chance to attend the opening of an exhibition at the Graves Art Gallery, a project our young people helped shape with their ideas and feedback.

Over half-term, we welcomed Rocksteady Music School for a full-day music camp. Members of our Fruitbowl and Prism groups had the chance to explore different instruments and finished the day performing together as a band.

To round things off, our young people got creative in a craft session making fungi and toadstools from egg boxes, inspired by a recent Nature Connect walk. 🍄

This evening

Thousands of UK armed forces personnel were dismissed, arrested, or forced to resign due to their sexual orientation prior to the ban being lifted in 2000. Personnel faced intrusive, often aggressive, investigations by the Special Investigation Branch (SIB), with some serving time in military prison and having their careers destroyed. Many lost their pensions, medals, and had "disgraceful conduct" recorded in their documents. This event gives us the chance to speak with three women who were directly affected by the ban, as they share with us how this regressive law affected their lives and careers.

This event is a collaboration with SAYiT and Sheffield Students' Union.
