☀️ What is "community energy" anyway?
You'll be hearing us use that phrase a lot, so let's start there.
Community energy means local people coming together to develop, own, and benefit from renewable energy projects - solar panels, hydropower, heat pumps, and more.
By working and living here, local people know the buildings, rivers, building managers or business owners who are key to deciding to move ahead with renewable energy projects - getting more projects off the ground.
After working on the project details (with professional technical input) we can then move to a community share offer: local people invest directly in a project or portfolio, in return for a modest financial return.
Done this way, profits from our local energy transition stay right here - either through investment returns or (after the specified interest has been paid), to a community fund - supporting further local benefit.
This isn't a new idea. Reading Community Energy Society have already delivered projects here in Wokingham Borough. It's a model that works - and with growing government support for locally-led energy, we think it's time to take community energy in Wokingham Borough to the next level, with a group dedicated to our own communities. And we look forward to learning from and working with neighbouring groups!
That means:
🏡 More clean energy generation based right here in the Borough
💷 The chance for local people to invest in and benefit from it directly
🌍 A practical, tangible way to reduce carbon emissions
