" I am delighted to report that evidence suggests red squirrels are breeding successfully in many areas across North Yorkshire and encouragingly heading towards higher potential dispersal levels - up to 16km depending on the landscape.

Reds are particularly now popping up within real range of becoming residents of West Yorkshire and potentially beyond too.

If you'd like to support this red squirrel recovery, particularly any landowners, please get in touch with the local groups in Yorkshire and/or UK Squirrel Accord.

A few weeks ago, after the sighting of Red Squirrels in Settle, a couple of us met with Julie Bailey who has, for many years helped with conservation of Red Squirrels, and has set up the Yorkshire Dales Red Squirrel Alliance.
She spoke with us about how successful work has been in other areas, where Red Squirrels are now thriving, and she showed us all the paperwork, documentation, risk assessments, procedures etc that has been set up.
Moving forward, I said I'd set up a page and group for "Settle Squirrels" 🐿️ so people can find out more information and record any sightings.
They can also message this page, with any info etc.
She said that there have been several sightings of Reds around Settle and District, and it was totally possible and viable for them to thrive here, following similar conservation techniques as has happened in other areas.
