It was a pleasure to welcome our local MP Julian Smith MP to our office, alongside North Yorkshire Councillor David Staveley.

We had a great discussion around creating clear pathways into the ecology sector through apprenticeships, traineeships and our partnerships with local colleges and the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust.

We’re proud to employ a large number of local people, offering professional consultancy careers within a rural area and helping to retain skills and talent locally.

It was encouraging to showcase this work, and particularly pleasing to see the support from both our MP and Councillor, with a shared commitment to supporting and investing in the local community.

Spare room in the Settle area for an ecology graduate?

PBA has a long history of working with local schools and building successful career pathways for local students into professional ecology. But for certain positions we also need to recruit nationally. We would like to find opportunities for our new recruits to find welcoming accom in the local community.

We would like to invite expressions of interest from the Settle area in potentially providing short-term accom for new PBA recruits, who are recent graduates. This opportunity might eg be of interest to local families with a spare room, whose fledglings are starting to fly the nest.

HMRC’s rent-a-room scheme potentially allows homeowners to rent a room in their house (which is their main residence) without paying any tax. Initially for one month, payment would be ?500pcm, which PBA would pay directly in the first month, in advance. After a month, the graduate might then either move to long-term local accom, or might potentially continue with a host family for an agreed period.

If this might be of interest, please email PBA’s MD [email protected] to arrange an informal meeting in the first instance. PBA might then offer a managed introduction to a successful graduate (perhaps via MS Teams), to see whether they might be a good match for a host family.
