HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE OF HOME EDUCATION IN WIGAN.

At Active Futures Foundation, we’re exploring the possibility of developing a fully resourced Home Education Hub, but we don’t want to decide what that looks like on our own.

We want to hear from the people who know home education best – parents, carers and young people themselves.

That’s why we’re creating a Home Education Working Party to help shape future opportunities and explore what support is really needed within our local community.

📅 First Working Party Meeting
🕖 Thursday 2nd July – 7:00pm
📍 Active Futures Foundation CIC, Longshoot Close, Scholes, Wigan, WN1 3NH

Whether you’ve been home educating for years, are relatively new to the journey, or simply want to help shape something positive for local families, we’d love to hear from you.

This isn’t about selling a programme.

It’s about listening, learning and building something together.

Home Educating Families – We Want To Hear From You

At Active Futures Foundation, we are passionate about supporting home educated young people and their families.

Over the past few months we’ve had the privilege of meeting some fantastic young people through our pilot Home Education Programme. We’ve seen first-hand the importance of providing opportunities for social interaction, creativity, physical activity, confidence building and preparation for the future.

But we know that every family is different.

Rather than making assumptions about what the home education community needs, we want to listen.

Over the coming weeks, we are looking to create a small Home Education Working Party made up of parents, carers and young people to help shape future opportunities at Active Futures Foundation.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on:

- What support is currently missing locally?

- What opportunities would you like to see for young people?

- What challenges do home educating families face?

- What would an ideal Home Education Hub look like?

We are exploring the possibility of developing a fully resourced Home Education Hub in Wigan, but we want any future provision to be shaped by the community it is designed to serve.

If you’d be interested in being part of the conversation, please comment below, send us a direct message, or email [email protected]

Let’s build something together.

Home Education Programme Update

We wanted to provide a quick update regarding our next Home Education Programme block, which was due to begin on Friday 5th June.

After reviewing current registrations, we have made the decision to postpone the start of the next block and relaunch at a later date.

While we have received interest from several families, we don’t currently have the numbers required to create the group experience that we believe young people deserve. Rather than compromise on quality, we have chosen to wait until we can deliver the programme in the way it was intended.

Our pilot programme was a huge success, with young people developing new skills, building confidence, exploring creativity, making social connections and enjoying a wide range of activities including sewing, clay modelling, team challenges and personal development workshops.

We remain fully committed to developing opportunities for home educated young people across Wigan and would like to thank everyone who has supported, shared and expressed an interest in the programme so far.

If you would like to hear about future programmes, please send us a direct message or email [email protected] and we will keep you updated on future opportunities.

If a number of families are still interested but haven’t yet confirmed, please get in touch ASAP as we will make a final decision based on demand.

Thank you for your continued support.

What a fantastic pilot block for our Active Futures Foundation CIC Home Education Programme.

Over the past 6 weeks, young people have:

🧵 Learned to use sewing machines
🎨 Designed and created their own bunting
👐 Explored clay modelling and sculpture
💡 Developed creativity, patience and problem-solving skills
🤝 Built confidence and social connections in a supportive environment

The growth in confidence, engagement and willingness to try something new has been incredible to see. What started as a pilot has already shown the power of providing a small, structured and nurturing space for home educated young people to learn, create and connect.

A huge thank you to the families who placed their trust in us and to the young people who fully embraced the experience each week. Your support and feedback has been invaluable as we continue developing the programme.

BLOCK 2

Our next 6-week block is planned to begin on Friday 5th June, subject to meeting minimum numbers.

If you are interested in your young person joining us, this is the final opportunity to register your interest.

📚 Section 19 Education – Your Child’s Rights

Many families are unaware that Local Authorities have a legal duty to arrange suitable education for children who cannot attend school due to illness, anxiety, EBSA, exclusion, or placement breakdown.

A child doesn't need:
❌ An EHCP
❌ A diagnosis
❌ SEN Support

for Section 19 duties to apply.

If a child is unable to access school, education must still continue.

📝 You can read more about Section 19 on our website, along with our free template Section 19 request letter to help parents raise concerns directly with their Local Authority.
