Sidewalk Youth Project is a registered Christian charity( #700733) that has been working in Scarborough for over 30 years. Founded by Churches Together in 1989, Sidewalk seeks to draw alongside young people and develop trusting relationships with a view to building stronger communities together. We have a number of different strands to our work.
1. Detached Youth Work
Detached youth work has been
at the heart of what we do throughout the history of Sidewalk. We go out on the streets and chat to young people wherever they choose to meet. We're not there to get young people off the streets. We're not there to tell them what to do. We are simply there to get to know young people and talk about the issues that are most relevant to them.
2. Group Work
Meeting young people on the street often acts as a stepping stone to developing new opportunities. We work with young people to develop their ideas into experiences. Previous examples include dance workshops, cooking projects and open drop-in sessions. What do you wan't to do?
3. Mentoring
We currently operate our mentoring service in Graham School 3 days a week. Our trained mentors are there to support young people, offering a listening ear and helping people work through whatever issues they might be facing.
4. Activity Trips
We organise activity trips that give young people the opportunity to venture beyond the borders of Scarborough. Previous outings include trips to skate parks across the country, ice skating, rock climbing, kayaking and even a trip to York Minster to meet the Bishop! These experiences give young people the chance to learn new skills at the same time as developing confidence. If you've got an idea for a trip you'de love to do. Lets us know!
