Sawbridgeworth Community First Responders

Sawbridgeworth Community First Responders We are entirely funded by donations. The ambulance service provides free training and assessment, and start-up equipment, but groups are self-funded.

We are Sawbridgeworth Community First Responders (CFRs) – dedicated volunteers trained by the East of England Ambulance Service to respond to 999 emergencies in Sawbridgeworth and the surrounding villages. About Sawbridgeworth Community First Responders
Community First Responders are activated by the East of England Ambulance Service to attend emergency calls at the same time that an ambulance res

ource is dispatched, and often arrive first because they're so close to a call. Volunteers are trained in the use of oxygen therapy, CPR and use of automated external defibrillator (AED) which allows them to give life-saving care until the ambulance arrives.

🚨 A Red Heat Health Alert is in place across the East of England this week as temperatures are set to rise.

Hot weather can have serious impacts on anyone’s health and we often see increased demand on our services during these periods, including cases of dehydration, heat exhaustion and breathing difficulties.

To help keep yourself and others safe during the heatwave: 💧 Drink plenty of fluids

🌤️ Avoid the sun during the hottest part of the day (11am–3pm)
🧴 Wear sunscreen and wear appropriate clothing
👵 Check on elderly relatives, neighbours and those most at risk

We’re asking everyone to play their part — please only call 999 in a life-threatening emergency. For urgent but non-emergency care, use NHS 111 online or by phone, or speak to a local pharmacist.

✅ Taking these simple steps can help keep you safe and ensure our crews are available for those who need them most.

The Red Heat Health Alert is currently in place from 1am on Wednesday 24 June until 11pm on Thursday 25 June.

Performing CPR can save a life but it can also have an emotional impact.

For bystanders, stepping in during a cardiac arrest is often sudden, intense, and traumatic.

Even when CPR is successful, the experience doesn’t simply end when the ambulance arrives 🚑

That’s why, through the Out‑of‑Hospital cardiac arrest desk project, we’re funding vital aftercare support for bystanders who have had to perform CPR, to support their mental wellbeing.

After the incident, bystanders receive a follow‑up call to check in on how they are coping. This gives them the opportunity to talk through what happened, ask questions, and process the experience in a safe, supportive way. If needed, they can then be referred or signposted to further support.

So far 73 bystanders have been contacted and provided this support - because saving a life shouldn’t come at the cost of your own wellbeing 💚

This support is thanks to a community resilience grant from NHS Charities Together.

When someone goes into cardiac arrest, the moments before ambulance crews arrive can make all the difference.

Thanks to a project funded by our charity, advanced paramedics are now using live video support to see what’s happening at scene in real time - guiding bystanders through CPR, supporting defibrillator use, and offering reassurance when it’s needed most.

In one case, a son performing CPR on his father was guided step-by-step through live video. Initially, the compressions were too shallow and too slow, but once the advanced paramedic could see what was happening, they were able to reposition him and coach him into more effective CPR.

With this real-time support and reassurance, he was able to help save his dad’s life ❤

“Providing callers with reassurance that they are doing absolutely the right thing has been hugely important. Even in situations where patients don’t survive, people are left knowing they did everything they possibly could for that person.” Liam Sagi, Advanced Paramedic.

Water can be unpredictable. Always keep a close eye on children near water, even for a moment. Cold water shock can affect anyone’s ability to swim — and it can happen in summer as well as winter.

Be Water Aware. Stay safe.
