This year the competition focuses on biodiversity projects, for which we have chosen the rejuvenation of the Woodland.

Here at Richborough Roman Fort we welcome all visitors, including dogs.

Like the Romans we take great care of our canine friends – you’ll find a water bowl and doggy biscuits waiting on arrival.

All we ask is keep dogs (such as Arthur the Patterdale Terrier pictured after a brisk walk around the Claudian ditches) on their leads.

The Romans generously attributed the Goddess Minerva with wisdom, justice, law, victory, trade and the arts. They also associated her with owls; so it could only be a sign of good fortune when one of our volunteers at Richborough Roman Fort was pelted from a great height with barn owl pellets yesterday. Pellets are the regurgitated parts of prey – bones, fur, feathers – which the birds regurgitate in lozenge-shaped blackened masses. Our colleague rightly felt tremendously honoured!

This week we mark the feast of St Augustine of Canterbury, the evangelical missionary sent by Pope Gregory to convert the pagans of Kent.

At Richborough Roman Fort we have the ruins of a chapel dedicated to the pathfinding prelate.

Tradition has it that it was at Richborough that Augustine landed before making his way to Canterbury.

On the Hedge

Here at Richborough Roman Fort we believe in the importance of looking after the diversity of animal life that have made their home amongst the ancient ruins.

This month we’ve added a house for hedgehogs. Designed to keep the animals safe and warm it is now nestling amongst bushes and trees we’re hoping a hog will adopt this home soon.

The new Hedgehog house was made by one of our very talented volunteers over at Walmer Castle Garden team
