The sun is beginning to set earlier and earlier as we move through our last open month of the year at Richborough Roman Fort.
If you need any more encouragement to come and visit us before we close on November 1st just look at the late afternoon skies we have waiting for you— the sun blazes low over our proud bronze-coloured walls. Glorious!

As we mark and celebrate Black History Month it's affirming to note that as far back as the 3rd century CE there is evidence of African people living in Roman Britain. Ethiopian troops were based as far north as Hadrian's Wall.
As a principal conduit to the province of Britannia, Richborough Roman Fort and port would have welcomed all to our island — as we proudly continue to do so today.

Black histories are a vital part of England’s story, reaching back many centuries. There is evidence of African people in Roman Britain as far back as the 3rd century AD, and black communities have been present since at least 1500.

Richborough Roman Fort is famous for it's towering fortifications. But they aren't entirely intact. At some point, perhaps over a thousand years ago, the great east wall collapsed. Large chunks of the west and north wall also fell. Amazingly many of these vast clumps of flint, brick and marble still survive in the very places they rolled so long ago.

Good morning! As dawn mist rises above Richborough Roman Fort the day promises perhaps one of the few gloriously sunny days of the season left. Make the most of it by visiting us in East Kent.

English Heritage have over 400 historic sites spread across England. All of them are completely free to enter with English Heritage Membership.
100 of our guidebooks were recently donated to Richborough Roman Fort for visitors to browse through one of the greatest and most diverse collection of historic properties in Europe. And perhaps encourage those of you not yet members to join!
