Autumn Scooter Scoot
Our group of customers, volunteers and staff set off from Salisbury Shopmobility soon after 11am on Thursday 2nd October, and travelled along Blue Boar Row towards Wi******er Street.
Our group were driving scooters and powerchairs in a convoy on a pre-planned route along the city pavements to explore lesser-known streets to the east and north-east of the city centre.
The Blue Badge Guide, Steve Sharp, told the group about the fascinating history of the Greencroft area, the yard of Nelson Morris (a former horse dealer and slaughterer) and Wyndham House. The group continued to Bourne Hill Gardens and then to the peaceful and pleasant 'Secret Garden' at Bourne Hill.
We were welcomed to the Secret Garden by Penny and Kim who are part of the team of volunteers that make the garden look so wonderful. Penny shared her wealth of knowledge about the plants and the way the volunteers have developed the site into a beautiful oasis of green in the heart of Salisbury for everyone to enjoy.
For those who don't know, the Secret Garden is situated to the north side of the Bourne Hill building where Wiltshire Council and Wiltshire Police have their base and is largely accessible for those on scooters, powerchairs or wheelchairs. The scooter scoot group did a lap of the Secret Garden before everyone sang Happy Birthday to one of the group who was celebrating her birthday.
On the return, the Scooter Scoot party headed towards the Arts Centre (formerly St Edmunds Church) and back via St Edmunds Church Street to hear tales about John Wesley outside Salisbury Methodist Church. The tour guide was thanked and given a round of applause for all the interesting information that he had imparted.
The group then made their way along Salt Lane and Chipper Lane back to Castle Street and onward back to Shopmobility.
One participant was heard to say 'I have never been down this street in Salisbury!' Another said about the Secret Garden 'I didn't know this was here!'
A selection of hot drinks, savoury refreshments and sweet treats were served back at Shopmobility on our return. The chance to mingle and have social time together was much appreciated by everyone.
The next event that the Salisbury Shopmobility team and the 'Friends of Salisbury Shopmobility' Charity will be organising is the Carol Singing (11am) in The Maltings and Christmas Raffle Draw (12 noon) in Shopmobility on Thursday 11th December 2025.
