Surfers Against Sewage is a national marine conservation and campaigning charity that inspires, unites and empowers communities to take action to protect the ocean and our blue spaces. Our Campaigns

Water Quality - Sewage and agricultural pollution still plague the rivers and ocean. We are calling for an end to sewage pollution to guarantee safe seas, all year round. Our ambition is to end sewa

ge discharges into UK bathing waters by 2030. Ocean & Climate - To reverse the ocean and climate crisis, we need urgent and drastic reduction in carbon dioxide emissions as well as the rapid embracing of nature-based solutions to limit carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere. Our ambition is for the UK to be net-zero by 2030. Ocean Recovery - The UK’s seas host some of the most biodiverse life in the world. However, due to the increasing pressure from human activities, marine biodiversity has decreased dramatically. Our ambition is for 30% of the ocean and all UK Marine Protected Areas to be highly protected by 2030. Plastic Pollution - To solve the plastic pollution crisis, we need to reduce the production and consumption of non-essential single-use, throwaway and polluting plastic, and build a circular economy that ensures plastics are designed to be reused and repaired. Our ambition is to end single-use plastic pollution on UK beaches by 2030. SAS is a registered charity in England and Wales No: 1145877

πŸ€‘πŸ’© While water companies continue to pollute for profit, people, wildlife, and the environment pay the price.

77% of the UK public support a change in ownership models, yet the government is ploughing ahead with a Water Bill that will keep us locked into this profit-driven scandal.

🌊 Today is the start of the bathing season in Scotland and Northern Ireland, and a great opportunity to meet the community behind the new Scottish bathing water πŸ“ Loch Leven, Glencoe.

After a brilliant campaign by Loch Leven Sea Savers, this swim spot was officially designated earlier this year (a huge win). And today is the first day it starts to benefit.

June 1st is the start of the Scottish bathing season. And although we think having a β€˜bathing season’ is ridiculous (we all get in year-round), this does mean the loch will get regularly tested for water quality for the very first time.

Basically, pollution here can’t be ignored any longer. That means more transparency, more accountability, and actual pressure on the people responsible for pollution to sort it out. And none of that happens by accident. Local water lovers made this happen.

✊ And if you love your own swim spot, you can protect it too by starting your own application with support from us: https://pulse.ly/xwc1ls2v4p

πŸš¨πŸ’© Figures show 78 serious pollution incidents last year, up from 75 in 2024.

Thames Water was responsible for 25 of the 78 serious pollution incidents last year, and figures from the EA we obtained through FOIs show Anglian Water, Southern Water and Yorkshire Water were joint second with 12 each.

Only 7% of people support keeping the current privatised model, yet ministers are pressing ahead with a Clean Water Bill that leaves its rotten core intact.

❌ The Government’s willingness to keep ignoring the public’s demand for change is STAGGERING. We need a thorough review of alternative models for running our water infrastructure: no amount of dry weather can disguise the fact that this system is failing people, rivers, and our seas.

The only way to end the sewage scandal is for the Government to take back control of failing water companies and remove the profit motive for pollution.

Croyde, one of the UK's best breach breaks, the heart of North Devon's surf community, and last year the surf spot with more sewage discharges by hour than any other in the whole UK.

Incredibly Croyde is already leading the way to retain that crown, this year, there has already been over 550 hours of sewage discharged from the two CSOs at Croyde on the beach and on Baggie Point, thanks South West Water....

πŸ„πŸŒŠ Not all surfboards are created equal. This one’s a statement. 🌊🎨

Cornish artist and surfer Simon, aka Porthtowan Fine Arts, has teamed up with legendary board builders Cord Surfboards and master shaper Markie Lascelles to create a one-of-a-kind piece inspired by the Cornish coastline, surf culture, and the fight for a cleaner ocean. 🀝

Simon’s work turns waste into warning, from broken bodyboards transformed into towering installations to surfboards reimagined as bold contemporary art. Now, one of these unique creations could be yours. πŸ‘€

🚨 The Afon Cynffig Kenfig River is dying before our eyes.

πŸ’© For weeks, Welsh Water has been pouring raw sewage into the river while NRW stands by watching.

This is unacceptable. This level of pollution is the predictable result of a broken system where water companies dump waste into our rivers and seas, and face little more than a slap on the wrist.

Wildlife suffers. Communities suffer. And the river pays the price.

The local community have reported the issue, and now it's over to NRW to hold Welsh Water to account. πŸ‘€ We continue to work with communities on the ground and monitor the situation.

Porthleven, England's best wave? Certainly Cornwall's, a proving ground for our top surfers and bodyboarder, one of the Cornwall's most picturesque fishing towns. Sounds idyllic, except so far this year South West Water have discharged sewage into the lineup for 141 hours, and it is only May....

πŸ€”βŒ Why does the Government think their plans to tackle the sewage scandal go far enough?

Earlier this year, they published the White Paper. A new Vision for Water, as they called it. But did they consult the public on these plans?

No. WE DID. 37,470 people shared their views with us.

The bottom line - 82% of people don't think the government are doing enough to end water companies' profit from dumping sewage in our seas, rivers and lakes, or put public health first. ONLY 1% BELIEVE CURRENT PROPOSALS WILL FIX THIS BROKEN SYSTEM. πŸ’© πŸ’© πŸ’©

That's why thousands of you joined us for the Paddle-Out Protests last week. That's why over 284,000 of you signed our petition. 🀬 With this kind of public outrage, those in power can't bury their head in the sand forever.

So sign, share, and tell us what you think in the comments about the current plans. πŸ‘‡

🚨 UPDATE: Yesterday, we met with the Secretary of State for the Environment, Emma Reynolds, and the Minister for Water, Emma Hardy.

Reuben Santer joined us - you might recognise his story if you've watched factual drama on Channel 4 - to speak about the impact sewage pollution has on human health.

We brought more evidence - thousands of sickness reports, and over 270,000 petition signatures demanding the government remove the profit-motive underpinning the failure of the water system and prioritise public and environmental health.

There's still time to influence the upcoming Clean Water Bill, to make sure it goes far enough and the government changes how this broken system is run πŸ‘‰ add your voice: https://pulse.ly/gkcl8zrtwj Already signed? Share it far and wide!
