Thank you to the building survey department at Bidwell’s who had nine volunteers come to Ickleton for a community day. We were delighted to show them all the things in the village. A walk around the churchyard which has been proposed for a wildlife award. A talk on the gardens and the Community pub restoration of The Lion at Ickleton and a talk and walk at Brewers Field nature reserve Duxford. The day ended with a stunning walk on the bulks of Rectory Farm to see first class country stewardship. The day covered rain harvesting and pond restoration. The hands-on work showed the group worked so well as a team to trim a hedge by hand to clear a public path without disturbing the birds. Ickleton look forward to welcoming them back. Bidwells

Passionate about our wonderful pub what great news!

We’re absolutely thrilled to share that we’ve been named Cambridgeshire Pub of the Year at the 2026.

Less than a year since reopening as a community owned free house, this is a really big moment for us. It's a testament to the love, hard work and sheer determination that has gone into saving The Lion at Ickleton and bringing it back to life.

There are far too many people to thank individually (and we’d be here until next year), but you all know who you are. Big love. We genuinely couldn’t have done this without you.

A special shout out goes to Plunkett UK and the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority for helping us to get going with our campaign, as well as to Pippa Heylings and our county and district councillor Peter McDonald, who believed in the project and supported us right from the very beginning.

This award isn’t just for all the hard work that went into renovating the building, or the fabulous food made with love by our chefs, or the friendly service by our lovely front of house team or even the great beer we source from a range of fantastic local breweries.

It’s also for all of you who showed up, chipped in, fundraised, volunteered, shared posts, planted pots, or simply bought a pint and cheered us on.

The Lion is so much more than a pub to us. Isn't it wonderful that other people think the same.

Thank you all who came to the Ickleton Society AGM - it was a lovely evening . The talk by Alison Dixon was so interesting -
Originally from the Lake District, and following study at Bournemouth and Sheffield, Alison has been a professional archaeologist for over 30 years and is a full member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA). She worked for the Cambridge Archaeological Unit (part of the University of Cambridge) as a Senior Manager for over 27 years and has been responsible for major projects such as the new town of Northstowe, Grand Arcade in the centre of Cambridge and Trumpington Meadows. Although interested in all periods of the past she has a particular keenness for post-Roman archaeology through to modern times, including WWII, railways and industrial buildings. She has also worked on many historic buildings including pubs, farmyards, medieval churches and cathedrals. Alison has worked in locations as diverse as Barra in the Outer Hebrides and Southern Italy.

Community engagement is increasingly important in all areas of archaeology. Alison was Manager of Access Cambridge Archaeology, an archaeology outreach unit within the University of Cambridge for five years from 2015 to 2019.

Alison is a former President of the Cambridge Antiquarian Society, which is dedicated to the safeguarding, investigation and preservation of Cambridgeshire’s past, and was recently appointed as Cathedral Archaeologist to Bury St. Edmund's Cathedral.
It was incredible how much was discovered in the hole that had been dug off Chesterton Road. In a matter of two weeks under pressure to have the road reopened with space for only two people came artifacts from the Anglo Saxons, The Romans and a few skeletons - literally!! We hope to invite Alison back in the future. Thanks to Dilip for providing our refreshments from the shop.

The Ickleton Society Easter Egg Hunt was in the Recreation playground this year and was so well attended with over 150 eggs hidden and found! Ickleton has the most wonderul polite and grateful children who always share and are kind.

The AGM for The Ickleton Society will be on Wednesday 13th May 2026 at 730pm in Ickleton Village Hall. The short AGM followedby refreshments. Then a talk The Story of Cambridge in One Hole- by Alison Dickens a well known local archhaeologist - about an excavation which revealed so much local history. All are welcome - free for members and non members £5 (including refreshments)

Thank you to all who came to the Ickleton Society Annual Litter pick. It was a beautiful morning and it had great results- the village was so clean. The Georgina Owen Award was presented to Nina Giddings who had organised her own litter pick earlier in the year.
