The World Health Organisation has been investigating the new Covid variant. Cases have risen sharply in the UK. XFG, known as Stratus, now accounts for nearly 40% of Covid cases, the latest data from the UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA) revealed.

Whilst Covid cases have remained stable, the threat hasn’t gone away. With the emergence of the new variant, it’s even more important than ever to be aware of the signs and symptoms of Covid and who is eligible for the Covid vaccine this autumn.

Dr Amanda Doyle, National Director for Primary Care and Community Services at NHS England, said: “The threat from getting seriously ill from flu and COVID-19 is all too real and each year we see hundreds of thousands of people hospitalised due to these nasty viruses – especially across the winter months.

“Vaccination is our best defence against these viruses and can be lifesaving – so I would urge mums-to-be, parents of young children and teens, and others who are eligible to come forward or book appointments for their jabs as soon as possible, to help protect themselves and loved ones.”

If you've been feeling under the weather recently, with symptoms such as a sharp sore throat and high temperatures, it's possible you may have caught one of the new strains of Covid-19 that's been doing the rounds this autumn.

It's been five years since the initial outbreak of coronavirus, and several different variants have since emerged.

The most common variants currently circulating in the UK are XFG, also known as Stratus, and NB. 1.8.1, referred to as Nimbus, according to health officials.

It's normal for viruses to evolve as they spread between people over time. When the changes become significantly different, the new virus types are known as variants.

Covid can still cause a wide range of symptoms, including headache, coughing, a blocked or running nose and exhaustion, making it difficult to distinguish from a cold or flu.

If you think you have Covid you should stay home if possible and avoid contact with vulnerable people. If you have symptoms and need to leave the house, advice remains that you should wear a face covering. Washing hands regularly and using and disposing tissues in bins can also reduce the spread of this and other respiratory illnesses.

Two more sessions of vaccine delivery will take place at the Tilling Green Vax Centre on 1 and 8 Nov 2025. If eligible please book on line.

The first cases of a new Covid-19 variant have been detected in England as the virus spreads across Britain, the UK’s health agency has confirmed

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said 13 cases of Covid strain NB.1.8.1 had been recorded in England, with “small numbers” detected across the UK.

It’s unclear how many cases of the new strain, which now account for just over 10 per cent of global infections, have been recorded in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

Since first being recognised in January 2025, the omicron variant has spread to several states across the US, Australia, Thailand and is the most dominant variant in China and Hong Kong.

- New COVID strain arrives in the UK
A new Covid-19 variant, NB.1.8.1, is spreading globally, accounting for more than 10 per cent of infections and has been designated a “variant under monitoring” by the World Health Organization (WHO).

- The NB.1.8.1 variant, first detected in January 2025, has spread to the US, Australia, Thailand, China, and Hong Kong, with initial cases registered in late April.

- Experts believe NB.1.8.1 can infect cells more efficiently and may trigger gastrointestinal symptoms, but there is no evidence that it causes more severe illness than previous variants.
Common symptoms of the NB.1.8.1 variant include fatigue, fever, muscle aches, and sore throat, similar to other Omicron subvariants.

- Cases of the NB.1.8.1 variant have been confirmed in Northern Ireland, Wales, and popular British tourist hotspots, though the true number of infections is difficult to determine due to decreased testing.
