Following an £8000 grant from the Air Cadet Charity we acquired 15 VEX-IQ Robotic Kits at the end of April. We have had a great few weeks getting familiarised with the kits and the cadets are really engaging with the project. Cadets have started building basic robots and then adding claws, crane arms and sensors. Over the next few weeks we will introduce remote coding and more complex builds as we develop a syllabus for roll out to the rest of the Wing towards the end of the year.
On behalf of all at 2248 and SEM Wing many, many thanks to the ACC for the grant. It will go a long way to inspiring an enthusiasm for robotic engineering in our cadets and developing our skilled engineers of the future.

Last week cadets and staff attended a Cadet STEM Engagement Day at MBDA Systems in Stevenage.

The day was a great success from start to finish, Cadets took part in a wide range of activities and tours, including a multi staged STEM activity to design, build and test a launcher to catapult a paper ball, the ingenuity and engineering was very impressive, with some paper projectiles travelling some distance. They participated in an engaging early years talk and also enjoyed exciting and informative tours of the Digital Battlespace facility, with the Hardware in the Loop tour generating particular interest. These sessions provided a valuable insight into real world engineering and defence technology applications.

The overview of apprenticeship and graduate opportunities at MBDA was extremely well received, with many cadets expressing a strong interest in future placements and careers within the organisation.

Many thanks to all the staff at MBDA for creating such a great opportunity for our young people.

Last night we were delighted to welcome professors Jonathan Nichols and Suzie Imber from the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Leicester. They gave us an amazing insight into the exploration of Space, including how we get there and what we might find. An excellent presentation that we all thoroughly enjoyed. We are certainly looking forward to their next visit to the Sqn.

Thanks to Leicester Fire and Rescue Service for a great evening thoroughly enjoyed by the cadets

Last week, we were delighted to welcome Rutland Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets to the station for an evening focused on road safety, the dangers of the Fatal Four, and how to be safe and conscientious passengers.

The cadets also had the chance to experience the interactive Virtual Reality setup on the Hazard Express vehicle, giving them a realistic insight into the consequences of unsafe choices on the road.

Afterwards, they enjoyed a tour of the station and were also shown around the fire engine, and provided plenty of great questions and enthusiasm throughout.

A big thank you to the Air Cadets for being so engaged, energetic, and eager to learn, it was a pleasure having you with us!

We look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

if you are involved in a local community group and would like to arrange either some educational input or visit to our station, please don't hesitate to be in touch!
