Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II had a lifetime association with the UK's Armed Forces. At her own insistence, Princess Elizabeth joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS), the women’s branch of the British Army, in 1945, aged 18.

In doing so, she became the first female member of The Royal Family to join the Armed Forces.

Her father, King George VI, made sure that his daughter was not given a special rank in the Army. She was appointed as a second subaltern in the ATS on 24 February 1945.

By the end of , Princess Elizabeth had reached the rank of Junior Commander, the equivalent of Captain, having completed her course at No. 1 Mechanical Training Centre of the ATS and passed out as a fully qualified driver.

"It was so good to be able to meet people I had only communicated with electronically or by phone at the post-race reception."

After completing the for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity earlier this month, veteran Paul Wilcock, 51, from Chippenham still has more to come!

Paul, a former member of the Royal Corps of Signals, now works as a Senior Project Management Consultant at SA Group - a business management consultancy based in Westbury, Wiltshire. The company has recently been awarded the Gold Employer Recognition Scheme Award by the Armed Forces Covenant and continues to support veterans with their ongoing careers.

Paul also ran the Great South Run on the 17 October, and is due to run the ABP Newport Wales Marathon on the 24 October; with the Reading Half Marathon on the 7 November all in aid of SSAFA.

He says: "My father was Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers - REME. SSAFA supported my mother in the past. She used to talk fondly of the work SSAFA did to support her and her family."

He also reserves praise for the support he received on the London Marathon course: "The support out on the course, especially at the 25-mile point, gave a welcome boost."

If you would like to support Paul in raising more money for SSAFA, please visit his fundraising page at uk.virginmoneygiving.com/PaulWilcock3
