This is a disappointing decision. We have been campaigning for free dental care for head and neck cancer patients since the beginning of our campaign over 25 years ago.

Many patients develop serious oral health problems as a direct result of the treatment used to save their lives. These problems are through no fault of their own, yet they still have to pay for the dental care needed.

The Oral Health Foundation has voiced disappointment after the Government confirmed it has no plans to offer free NHS dental care to people diagnosed with head and neck cancer.

We have been campaigning for better access to NHS dentistry, not just for the sake of healthy teeth, but because we know so many dentists have been the first professionals to spot signs of mouth cancer.

Fair and equal access to dentistry is vital.

We have called for better education and awareness of mouth cancer symptoms, which can be as low as 8% in some populations, in our State of Mouth Cancer Report. Read the full report at mouthcancer.org

Some cancers could be diagnosed late as people cannot access a dentist, a university professor says.

The Swallows are almost two-thirds of the way to getting a government response to this petition for free dental care for head and neck cancer patients. Help them reach their goal using the link below.

We want the Government to fund free dental care for head and neck cancer patients both during and after treatment to address the significant oral health challenges that survivors may face, and to improve their overall quality of life.

Aftercare is crucial to any mouth cancer patient, but people are often left having to source things for themselves and there can be a big discrepancy in what people are able to access thanks to postcode lotteries.

Smoking is still one of the leading causes of mouth cancer, and increases your risk by up to ten times. Even long exposure to second-hand smoke can raise your risk, according to research.

Whenever we head out into the sun, most of us will take the time to put on suncream, but how many of us apply lip balm at the same time?

Skin cancer can develop on the lips, and one way to help protect yourself against it is to wear SPF lip balm, as well as limit the time you spend in the sun.
