Blocking estrogen is the 5-10 year journey I am on .70-80% of breast cancer patients will attempt this path.
I recently learned that reminding myself what blocked estrogen actually DOES to me physiologically, helps ground me when I am slipping off the rails 😵💫.
So, here I am to share this with you in case you are going through this, and ESPECIALLY if you love someone who is trying to do this.
Blocking estrogen ➡️ reduces neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, glutamate, and GABA, and increases inflammatory cytokines and alters hypothalamic GnRH neurons.
So if that is just a bunch of Greek to you, here is what that means for that person.
⬇️ serotonin -> lower mood and potential depression
⬇️dopamine -> impact on motivation, pleasure, and cognitive function
⬇️ glutamate -> impact on memory and neuroplasticity
⬇️GABA -> this is what calms us, so maybe your person takes more time to wind back down in any sort of stress
⬇️ endorphins -> less “feel good” chemicals effecting mood as well as pain regulation
•GnRH changes lends to those hot flashes
⬆️ cytokines without estrogen as a protectant -> inflammation and FATIGUE
That is A LOT! So, give that friend or loved one, or yourself a pat on the back, or perhaps a nice long hug!
And then, take your knowing of this and find how you will work around it. Because you will, and I will.
As you do, your compassion for those around you can grow.
This is not an excuse, just a knowing.
Know better -> do better.
As I figure out my work-arounds I will share. If you have some, please speak up too!
