EARLY MORNING BIRD WATCH
On a crisp April Saturday, seventeen members gathered at Fishlake Nature Reserve for a 6.30 am birdwatch led by local expert Mark Edgeller. Despite a chilly start that belied the season, the morning warmed beautifully as it progressed, and by the time the group dispersed at 10.00 am spirits were high — and for good reason. Over 40 species of bird had been recorded, making it a thoroughly rewarding outing for newcomers and seasoned birders alike.
Highlights were plentiful. Terns were observed nesting on the reserve's floating tern platforms, while Cetti's warblers called persistently from the bankside vegetation and a garden warbler added its rich, rambling song to the morning chorus. Most memorably, the first cuckoo of the season was heard — always a special moment — and a bird of prey perched on a distant post provided an atmospheric focal point for the group. Shoals of fish could be seen moving through the clear streams, adding to the sense of a nature reserve in fine health. It was, by all accounts, a tranquil and beautiful morning, made all the richer by Mark's conversational and knowledgeable exploration of the reserve. Many thanks to him for sharing his expertise so generously.

Romsey Spring Litter Pick and Stream Clean
This will be held on Saturday 18th April 2025 meeting at the Crosfield Hall car park at 9 am. It is a small, friendly group of volunteers from the Romsey and District Society, and we are very happy from any other volunteers to join us. Children must be accompanied by their parent.
We finish at around 1115 and meet at La Parisienne for a coffee.

Guidance for Litter Pickers: Litter picking in a public place, especially near a highway and stream banks involves a degree of risk. It is recommended that everyone does a visual site inspection and a risk assessment to identify possible hazards.
Volunteers have a duty towards themselves, fellow volunteers and the public to work safely. If there are any doubts about the safety of your site or the material forming the litter, then it should be avoided.
It is strongly recommended that the following items should be used at all times by volunteer litter pickers: -.... Strong gardening gloves which you will need to provide yourself.... A Hi-Vis Reflective Vest provided by the Society..... Light coloured clothing to further highlight volunteers to vehicle drivers.... Litter pickers provided by the Society and Test Valley Borough Council.... Strong boots or shoes in case of broken glass or jagged metal.... Mobile phone in case there is a need to contact emergency services. Please avoid handling broken glass, hypodermics and fly-tipped materials that may contain unsafe fluids or asbestos. These finds need to be reported to Test Valley Borough Council. If you are near a highway verge, please litter pick facing oncoming traffic. Do not pick from the road itself.
Volunteers participate on litter picks entirely at their own risk. A risk assessment is provided to read on the day. Neither TVBC nor the Romsey and District Society can be held liable for any loss, damage or injury caused as a result of the actions and omissions of volunteers.

Our AGM went well last night with many questions to our planning Chair about the Local Plan and why development planning applications can, at the moment, cannot be challenged. There was much concern that the brewery site remains derelict.
