🌟Throwback Thursday 🌟

Have you ever wondered how Girlguiding began?

The story starts with these remarkable people:

⚜️ Lord Robert Baden-Powell – Founder of the international Scouting movement. After noticing that girls wanted to take part in Scouting activities, he helped establish the Girl Guides in 1910.

⚜️ Agnes Baden-Powell – Robert’s sister, who played the leading role in creating and running the Girl Guides during its early years, helping to shape the organisation we know today.

⚜️ Lady Olave Baden-Powell – Robert’s wife, who became deeply involved in the movement and was appointed the first Chief Guide in 1918. She went on to champion Girl Guiding around the world for many decades.

Thanks to their vision and dedication, millions of girls and young women have been empowered through Girlguiding across the world ever since!

As part of Volunteers’ Week, members of Girlguiding, from the Romsey Division, spent time helping to spruce up Romsey Abbey by dusting inside and sweeping the outside grounds. To thank them for their hard work, the Abbey verger even treated the young members to a visit to the bell tower!

A selection of photographs show members of Girlguiding volunteering at Romsey Abbey during Volunteers’ Week. Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and their leaders are shown dusting, tidying and helping care for the Abbey and its grounds. One image shows the group posing together in front of the Abbey altar in their uniforms. The final image shows the girls enjoying a special behind-the-scenes visit to the bell tower, looking up at the wooden beams, ropes and bell-ringing equipment above them.

As part of Volunteers Week and the Big Help Out, we’re excited to launch our new Community Action badge. This set includes 3 badges that can be purchased individually or as a full set — we suggest awarding the main badge for the first activity completed, with the two smaller badges marking future actions. The challenge is all about inspiring our fantastic members to get involved in their local communities and make a positive difference. We have created a guidance document which offers activity ideas to get started, but there’s plenty of scope to explore your own creative ways to take action too. Find out more in the resources section of our website and purchase the badges from the region shop.

This section has roots and is placed at the bottom. Another section above on the left has flowers, bees, and half of a tree, as well as a kite with the Girlguiding trefoil and S W E Compass logo. The last section on the right has the other half of the tree and a person litter picking. They connect together with the bottom section showing the roots of the tree and plants above.

Despite the rain, 1st Nursling and Rownhams Brownies showed great enthusiasm as they had a go at archery taught by the 21st Romsey Scouts archery team. Not letting the wet weather dampen their spirits, they enjoyed learning new skills, taking aim, and cheering each other on throughout the session. Even leader Little Owl had a go! 🏹🎯☔️

2nd North Baddesley Guides went out to Foxlease as part of their Pioneering badge.

They were tasked with building bean bag catapults!

Learning lots of new skills like how to tie the perfect knots for the task 🪢

We’re pleased to say no bean bags were lost while testing the catapults!

The Guides even managed to rescue one that was stuck on a basketball hoop with some clever ingenuity!
