The Cleddau Project

The Cleddau Project The Cleddau is in crisis. Our river is failing, we need to act now.

Decades of pollution from sewage, agriculture, industry and other sources – as well as climate change – is severely compromising the health and habitats of the entire catchment ecosystem.

In this second interview with regenerative farmer Andy Cato, he's questioned about the challenges of scalability, whether regenerative farming systems are being used for greenwashing, the role of rewilding, and whether it could be adopted around the world.

Oli Dugmore asks Andy Cato your questions about sustainable agriculture.

An interesting conversation with DJ/musician turned regenerative farmer Andy Cato. Recognising that our modern food production systems are at breaking point, Andy argues that regenerative farming will help restore ecosystems, rebuild soil/water health, restore farmer agency and create a more resilient food system for the 21st century.

THE CLEDDAU CATCHMENT ASSESSMENT REPORT IS READY!!

From June 2024 to June 2025 over 90 heroic citizen science volunteers tested the water in streams and brooks draining into the Eastern and Western Cleddau. They covered 46 sites, testing twice a month, same day, same time. They took measurements of phosphate, nitrate, ammonia, flow, temperature, PH and turbidity. The data they gathered has been analysed and written up into a report by Professor Paul Withers of Lancaster University
The analysis shows widespread and variable nutrient pollution across the catchment; bad news for aquatic plants and organisms, periodically resulting in growth of algae (eg blooms), which can be harmful to river and human health.

You can read the report in full here https://thecleddauproject.org.uk/resources/

This study was designed to fill the gaps in Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru / Natural Resources Wales own data, raise awareness and give the local community a chance to 'do something'. It shows unequivocally that the Cleddau is in seriously poor ecological health.

This report was funded by Welsh Government

PEMBROKESHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL PETITION calling for a Clean Rivers Policy gets unanimous support

An excellent presentation was delivered by James Harrison-Allen at County Hall today. The atmosphere in the room and public gallery was extraordinary and the support for the Cleddau was total and unanimous (with applause from the gallery & supporters alike). Really a great day for the Cleddau, for the hardworking volunteers and everyone who is involved in and supportive of The Cleddau Project. Congratulations and enormous thanks to James for a highly successful and brilliantly debated petition!

https://pembrokeshire.public-i.tv/core/portal/home?utm_source=chatgpt.com

It would really help the case for the Cleddau if you send a quick email to your local councillor BEFORE THE DEBATE. You can find details of your local councillor here https://www.pembrokeshire.gov.uk/council

What to say?

Exactly what's worrying you about the Cleddau! What you've observed, pollution, declining fish stocks, biodiversity, natural habitats, moratorium on house building, public health, our local economy, tourism, who is paying attention and what is being done about it. Your email can be as short as a couple of sentences or a full email about why you’re so concerned about our failing river.

Thank you for your support!
