Mary Seacole born in Jamaica in 1805, died in London 14th May 1881: Jamaican/Scottish nurse, doctress, expert in Creole medicine & entrepreneur. Mary cared for those affected by conditions such as cholera and yellow fever in Jamaica and Panama. Then, despite rejection in London, she self-funded her passage to the Crimea to care for wounded and sick soldiers from all sides. The Mary Seacole Memoria
l will:
- capture the spirit of Mary and reflect her great achievements
- remind the public of the importance of the nursing profession
- remind the public of Britain's greatest black heroine who gave her life's work in support of others
The Appeal is chaired by Lord Clive Soley of Hammersmith. In June 2009 an artist selection panel, chaired by Baroness Amos and following an international call for artists, chose the internationally acclaimed artist, Martin Jennings to design the Mary Seacole Memorial Statue. It will stand in the grounds of St Thomas' hospital, opposite the Houses of Parliament. Planning permission was granted by Lambeth Council in April 2012. With donations and sponsorship received, we now just need to raise £20,000 to complete production of the memorial statue. You can donate on-line via www.justgiving.com/maryseacolememorial/donate.
