Mary Seacole born in Jamaica in 1805, died in London 14th May 1881: Jamaican/Scottish nurse, doctress, expert in Creole medicine & entrepreneur. Mary cared for those affected by conditions such as cholera and yellow fever in Jamaica and Panama. Then, despite rejection in London, she self-funded her passage to the Crimea to care for wounded and sick soldiers from all sides. The Mary Seacole Memoria

l will:
- capture the spirit of Mary and reflect her great achievements
- remind the public of the importance of the nursing profession
- remind the public of Britain's greatest black heroine who gave her life's work in support of others

The Appeal is chaired by Lord Clive Soley of Hammersmith. In June 2009 an artist selection panel, chaired by Baroness Amos and following an international call for artists, chose the internationally acclaimed artist, Martin Jennings to design the Mary Seacole Memorial Statue. It will stand in the grounds of St Thomas' hospital, opposite the Houses of Parliament. Planning permission was granted by Lambeth Council in April 2012. With donations and sponsorship received, we now just need to raise £20,000 to complete production of the memorial statue. You can donate on-line via www.justgiving.com/maryseacolememorial/donate. An uplifting end to the week.

Mary Seacole Trust Chair Dr. Trevor D. Sterling (Hon.causa) gave the keynote address at Guys & St Thomas’s hospital Nurses and Midwifery Awards ceremony today ahead of International Nurses Day next week.

He referred back to the Mary Seacole statute:

The disc represents the globe which today reflects the international contributions which make up the NHS.

The disc surface is pitted as it replicates the ground where Mary Seacole’s “British Hotel” was based in the Crimea. A reminder that at times of conflict and disaster, nurses and midwives put themselves in harms way.

The statue shows Mary walking stridently, a reminder that notwithstanding the challenges faced by nurses and midwives given the constant changes within the NHS , they remain stoic and dedicated to providing care.

The statue also stands 3 metres tall, which symbolises that those who are caring and compassionate should stand tall - important they underpin a caring society.

He finished by quoting the words of Mary Seacole - the inscripture at the base of the statue.

“Wherever the need arises, what ever the shore, I trust I shall have the higher privilege to minster to it”

These are challenging times - never has it been more important to be caring and compassionate.

Our latest Legend Inductee is Mary Seacole, a trailblazing Jamaican-born nurse, healer, and humanitarian. 🩺🌍

When doors were closed to her during the Crimean War, Mary opened her own. She established the British Hotel just miles from the battlefield where she treated wounded soldiers with compassion, courage, and skill.

Her blend of Western and Caribbean medicine saved lives and challenged perceptions. She stood for inclusive care long before the term existed and inspired generations of women, especially women of colour, to lead in healthcare and humanitarian work.

We are honoured to recognise her incredible legacy.
