31st May Dunkirk anniversary.
On this day in 1940 the command of 5th Battalion of the Green Howards received this hand-written order to begin the withdrawal back to Dunkirk, specifically to Bray Dunes which are just east of the town.

The regimental history notes that on 1st June, the 5th Battalion had 17 officers and 516 men.
On 16th May the Battalion was made up of 30 officers and 737 men. It was to lose many more before the remnants of the Battalion made it back to Blighty.

Todays is National Biscuit Day.

On national biscuit day, we give you what Private Raymond Henry Milner of the 5th Battalion of the then Yorkshire Regiment sent home from the front in WW1.

His note with the biscuit said that ‘..this is what we had to live on 2 days a week instead of bread..’ and he asked that it be kept as a souvenir to be used as an exhibition.
Job done.

The Romans came, conquered and left happy.

A brilliant morning of exploration, creativity and family fun at The Green Howards Museum today.

"Dig the Romans" invited families to discover Roman finds from Catterick, try on Roman armour and craft their own keepsakes.

So many beaming faces among adults and children alike.

Just 3 more days left to see Paul “Cuttsy” Cutler’s exhibition which can be found in the entrance to the museum. Last chance to see this on Saturday 30th May before we swap to our next display.

We’d also like to thank Paul for his unwavering support of the museum over the years, especially in 2026. He’s freely given his time - coaching football with the children of Catterick Garrison, organising charity raffles, veterans’ football matches and so much more. Together we’re helping secure the perpetuity of The Green Howard’s Museum.

Thank you for everything you do, Paul.
