Nothing In Rambling

Sister Suzie and Andy Twyman take you on a musical journey through Mississippi and Louisiana performing music by artists such as Memphis Minnie, Blind Boy Fuller and Elmore James. Guided by a mutual passion for early blues, they evoke the playfulness, power and soul of the music and the people who created it.

Suzie and Andy have toured the UK and Europe, and become Glastonbury favourites. In 2024 they've played as Nothing in Rambling at Red Rooster Festival, Upton Blues festival as well as Glastonbury. They’ve both enjoyed success as separate artists before working together. Suzie sings and rocks the blues with her band Sister Suzie and The Right Band. Andy performs a lauded one man band show, blending blues with Monty Python-esque comedy, and also plays guitar in Dana Gillespie’s London Blues Band.

Their chemistry brings out the mischief and humour in songs of sexual liberation. Their emotional connection with the stories of the early blues performers gives soul to the deep blues and gospel songs they perform. Andy’s nimble and authentic guitar work provides the perfect back drop for Suzie's powerful blues vocals and on-stage charm to shine as they come together in Nothing In Rambling.

Nothing in Rambling is a song recorded by Memphis Minnie. In 1910, at the age of 13, she ran away from home and worked on Beale Street in Memphis, singing on street corners. She was discovered by a talent scout for Columbia records in 1929 and continued to perform and record well into the 1950s. She died in 1973. The inscription on the back of her headstone reads

“The hundreds of sides Minnie recorded are the perfect material to teach us about the blues. For the blues are at once general, and particular, speaking for millions, but in a highly singular, individual voice. Listening to Minnie's songs we hear her fantasies, her dreams, her desires, but we will hear them as if they were our own.”

The duo Nothing in Rambling -Sister Suzie and Andy Twyman- will be appearing at St Mary’s Church Richmond on Friday 24 October where you will hear songs by Memphis Minnie and others and think of their fantasies, their dreams, their desires and contemplate your own….or just have a drink and enjoy the music!

Creative partnerships often end in a falling out of one kind or another. Paul Simon resented the accolades that Art Garfunkel received when he sang Bridge Over Troubled Water -a song which Simon had written. Glenn Frey, of The Eagles, famously had an on stage row with bandmate Don Felder which ended with Frey saying “Only three more songs until I kick your ass, pal!”

There are no such fireworks with Nothing in Rambling, a creative duo who both seem to be having so much fun when they appear on stage together. You can catch them and their joyful vibe at St Mary’s Church on Friday 24 October. Ticket details can be found below.
