Two native oak trees and their different leaves on Petersham Common. On the left is the Common oak (Quercus robur). The green colour is only because I could pick it off a tree! On the right is a Sessile oak leaf (Quercus petraea). It is brown as the 2 Sessile oaks on Petersham Common are very tall and I cannot reach any of the branches so it was on the ground. The Sessile oak trees are not common locally and the 2 on Petersham Common were from acorns collected by the Mayor of Verdun in 1916 from the Battlefield of Verdun and grown on at Kew Gardens. Twenty-one 'Verdun oaks' (as they became known) were successfully grown and planted in England. These are the only two known surviving 'Verdun oaks' after the last one at Kew was felled following Storm Jude in 2013. Sadly, none of the acorns from the 'Verdun oaks' found this autumn (in bucket) to grow on were viable due to gall wasp and grey squirrels (both invasion species). But hopefully next year.
