Kew Neighbourhood Association

Kew Neighbourhood Association Ensuring Kew's residents who need a helping hand are connected with volunteers who drive, shop, provide companionship and carry out light gardening.

🌼 Could you spare a little time for a Kew neighbour?

KNA is looking for Gardening Volunteers to help older and less mobile residents manage their gardens safely and confidently.

Just light tasks like weeding, tidying and clearing pathways can make a huge difference — helping someone feel less worried about trips and more able to enjoy their outdoor space again.

🌿 Flexible visits
🌿 No heavy lifting
🌿 Local and supported

Because sometimes clearing a path changes more than you think.

09/03/2026

Sometimes volunteering starts with something very simple.

For Hedy, it began with a visit to the Kew Neighbourhood Association Christmas Market shortly after she moved to the UK from Hong Kong. A conversation, a leaflet, and a warm welcome from volunteers led to something more.

Two years later, she is now one of our gardening volunteers.

In this short audio, Hedy shares what the role really involves.
Yes, there is weeding and tidying. But there are also cups of tea, conversations, shared stories, and the quiet satisfaction of helping someone enjoy their garden again when mobility makes it difficult.

For many of the people we support, their garden is something they deeply love but can no longer manage the way they would like to. A small amount of help can make a big difference.

If you enjoy being outdoors and would like to support someone locally, we would love to hear from you.

🌱 Volunteer gardeners are always welcome.

Could you offer a little time to help someone enjoy their garden again?

Your heart works tirelessly for you every day.

Taking small steps to care for it can help you stay well and independent for longer.

This February, Richmond Council is encouraging residents to check their heart health and take advantage of the free NHS Health Check available to those aged 40–74.

This simple check can help identify early signs of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, or kidney disease, often before symptoms appear.

Many heart conditions are preventable, and even small changes such as staying active, eating well, and stopping smoking can make a meaningful difference.

What supports your heart also supports your brain and overall wellbeing.

Defibrillators are also available across Richmond upon Thames in community spaces, and knowing where they are and how to use them could help save a life.

You can also speak to your GP or local pharmacy about booking a free NHS Health Check.

At Kew Neighbourhood Association, we support residents to remain independent, connected, and supported in their daily lives and our drivers can help take you to these appointments within Kew.

Staying independent as we age is shaped not only by time, but by the small choices we make each day, and the support around us.

Richmond Council has introduced Independent Richmond, a simple online tool designed to help residents understand their wellbeing and stay independent for longer.

Through a short self-assessment, it offers personalised guidance, practical suggestions, and information about local support and equipment that can make daily life easier and safer.

At Kew Neighbourhood Association, we see how important it is for people to remain confident in their own homes and connected to their community.

Our volunteers support residents through companionship, practical help, and regular contact.

Winter can make everyday tasks harder, particularly if mobility, health, or energy levels are limited.

Kew Neighbourhood Association offers practical support to local residents who may be finding things more challenging at this time of year. This includes help with shopping, light gardening that has become difficult to manage, companionship visits, and support getting to appointments.

If you are struggling to keep on top of things, it can help to ask for support sooner rather than waiting until it feels overwhelming. Having a bit of help with practical tasks often frees up energy for rest and recovery.

Our volunteers are local people who give their time freely to support others in the Kew community. If you or someone you care for could benefit from this kind of help, we are happy to talk things through and explain what might be possible.

January is also a time to recognise the quiet kindness that keeps our community going through the winter months.

We would like to thank our volunteers who continue to offer their time, care, and reliability to support local residents in Kew. Whether it is a regular visit, a phone call, or practical help, these small acts make a real difference.

Staying connected, even in simple ways, is important for both those receiving support and those giving it. A short walk, a friendly conversation, or feeling part of something local can help reduce isolation at this time of year.

We are proud to be part of a wider network of local support in Kew, and to work alongside organisations such as Kew Library, who also help people stay connected within the community.
If you are already involved, thank you. If you are considering volunteering, or would like to know more about how we work together as a local community, we would love to hear from you.

January can be a quiet and difficult month for many people. The colder weather and shorter days can make everything feel slower and more tiring, especially if you are spending more time at home.

At Kew Neighbourhood Association, we want to gently reassure you that you do not have to manage alone. We are here to offer steady, practical support and friendly connection, in ways that suit you.

Some people find it helps to keep a simple daily routine in winter, such as getting a little daylight each morning or having a regular time to speak to someone they trust. Small anchors like these can make the days feel more manageable.

If you live in the Kew area and feel you could benefit from a little extra help or company this winter, please get in touch. Even a small amount of support can make the days feel easier.
