πβ¨ What School Readiness Really Means β¨π
At Little Explorers, one of the questions we hear most often is:
π βIs my child ready for school?β
Many people think school readiness is about recognising letters, counting numbers or writing their name.
While these skills can be helpful, they are only a small part of the picture. π±
What truly helps children thrive is having strong foundations:
π Confidence to try new things
π£οΈ Communication skills
π Independence in everyday tasks
π Curiosity and a love of learning
π€ The ability to build relationships
πͺ Emotional resilience when things donβt go to plan
𧩠Problem-solving skills
π§₯ Self-care skills such as toileting, dressing and managing belongings
These foundations are built through play, exploration, real-life experiences and secure relationships. πΏ
When children pour their own drinks, climb a tree, help prepare snack, solve a disagreement with a friend, care for plants or explore the outdoors, they are developing the skills that prepare them not just for school, but for life. π
Every child develops at their own pace, and there is no rush. π¦
π± Childhood is not a race.
Children donβt need to be pushed ahead academically at 3 or 4 years old. They need time to play, explore, wonder, create and develop confidence in who they are. π¨πββοΈπ¬π³
Because school readiness isnβt about what a child knows.
β¨ Itβs about how a child feels.
A child who feels confident, curious, capable and secure is already well on their way. π
π Children donβt need to be ready for school. Schools need to be ready for children.
