We have been on another little adventure through the archives this time and managed to track down Rhigos primary schools first two log books these cover 1876 to 1926.

The first ever entry was on May 16th 1876:

''Rhigos Board School was opened today. No school Monday because there was a tea party in the school room for the children. Admitted 73 this morning. No school was previously kept in this parish under government inspection.''

''Mr Jones kept a private school in the old building, which is opposite to the Board School on the other side of the road for upwards of twenty years''

The records are filled with interesting information and give us an insignt into what Rhigos life was like at that time and we will find out more, because if we don't protect and conserve the history and heritage of Rhigos...who will?

Did you know in 1844 the marquis of bute contributed 50 guineas a year to a church school at Rhigos (these were rooms and not the victorian building seen today).
There were 20 pupils 6 girls and 14 boys attending.

1876 a new school is opened for the benefit of the colliers and miners under R.Crawshay.

''This movement originated entirely among themselves''

These men and families had little to nothing but they still chose to give from their own pockets in order for Rhigos kids to have a school of their own, there were 70 children attending by this time.

Miners gave 1 day of each pound of their wages to pay the teachers salary of £40

Rhigos's history and heritage matters ❤️

Rhigos primary school will be 150 years old next year!

Our visit to Hwb y Gors- A former Primary School

We are grateful to the staff of Hwb y Gors for showing us around their community hub in Cwmgors, Neath Port Talbot.

Awel Aman Tawe (AAT) is the driving force behind Hwb y Gors. It is a community energy charity. Local residents established AAT in 1998 to help tackle the climate emergency and to support our communities in becoming more resilient.

With funds generated from their community windfarm, the former Cwmgors Primary School was purchased in 2018, which had closed after many years of protest. The building required extensive work, and with additional money from many funders the school was restored and repurposed into this beautiful building. They endeavoured to retain as many of the heritage features as possible while making the building fit for future generations.

The building is powered by 90kW of rooftop solar panels and a 50kW ground source heating system fed by 16 boreholes reaching 60 meters underground - as deep as the shafts of the former Cwmgors Colliery! They have also implemented nature-based drainage and rainwater harvesting systems for flushing toilets and watering gardens, keeping everything as natural and wildlife-friendly as possible.

Hello everyone! We are Cynefin Rhigos, a group that hopes to transform the Rhigos Primary School site for the benefit of our community. The school was the heart of the village which had generations of families attending. We cannot forget that.

We have started a community-led project and want YOU to help with the vision. Please like and share this page, come with us on this journey. All residents are welcome to join, be it sharing ideas or volunteering your time. We need you to make this happen!

Many thanks/Diolch o galon,
