Jamia Al-Karam recently hosted the inaugural Basirah Symposium: Reflections & Discourse, marking the completion of the first reading cycle of the Basirah Reading Club.
Over the past months, students and alumni engaged in a guided reading of 'Lost Islamic History' by Firas Alkhateeb, exploring major themes surrounding Islamic civilisation, historical memory, identity, colonialism and the interpretation of the Muslim past in the modern age.
The symposium brought together graduates, students, teachers and guests for a day of thoughtful presentations, reflective engagement and scholarly discourse. Alumni participants delivered insightful and well-researched presentations on key sections of the text, followed by panel discussions examining important and often challenging questions surrounding Islamic history and its understanding today.
We extend our sincere appreciation to our young Imams and graduates who travelled from across the country to contribute to the symposium:
โข Haroon Hussain; Markazi Jamia Masjid Ghausia, Huddersfield
โข Imad Ud-Din Iqbal; Masjid Ghousia, Peterborough
โข Mohammad Yasin; Easton Jamia Mosque, Bristol
โข Awais Ahmed Hussain; Al-Karam Mosque, London
โข Muhammad Bilal Khan; Derby Jamia Mosque, Derby
โข Mohammed Hasan Patel; Jamia Al-Karam, Retford
Among the themes explored throughout the symposium were:
โข balancing theological and historical narratives
โข idealised and romanticised understandings of the past
โข colonial influence on Muslim historical consciousness
โข the role of popular Islamic history in shaping contemporary understanding
โข the importance of principled, intellectually confident engagement with history
A special note of gratitude to our teacher Mohammed Awais Maqsood, who led the guided reading programme for this first cycle. The symposium also featured reflections and concluding discussions led by Vice-Principal Bakhtyar H. Pirzada, alongside contributions from respected teachers and guests including Dr Mahboob Hussain and Maulana Gul Muhammad.
The Basirah Symposium reflects Jamia Al-Karamโs ongoing commitment to cultivating reflective scholarship, intellectual breadth and meaningful discourse rooted in both the Islamic tradition and contemporary awareness; nurturing students and graduates who engage the modern world with clarity, wisdom and 'both eyes open'.
Following the successful completion of Cycle 1, the second cycle of the Basirah Reading Club has now commenced for MayโJuly 2026, continuing this growing culture of guided reading, reflective learning and meaningful intellectual engagement within the Jamia Al-Karam community.
May Allah bless all those who participated, contributed and supported this important initiative, and grant lasting benefit through gatherings of knowledge, reflection and sincere discussion.
