Dydh da

If you have been following Rise Up Redruth for a while, you will already know that it is rooted in a simple idea: local people coming together, giving something back and taking positive action for our town.

I now feel that Rise Up Redruth is ready for its next stage.

Redruth is on the rise. There is energy, creativity and a growing sense of possibility across our town. I would like to explore how we can build on the interest and goodwill already gathered around Rise Up Redruth by establishing it as a volunteer-led constituted community group.

This would allow us to open a community bank account and apply for funding, so that projects do not have to depend on individuals paying for everything themselves.

This isn’t intended to duplicate or compete with the brilliant CICs, charities and community organisations already working in Redruth. I hope the group will have a different and complementary role: bringing residents together, coordinating volunteer-led projects and collaborating with existing organisations wherever we can add value or lend support.

Possible activities could include environmental improvements, arts and cultural projects, community events, active citizenship, improving shared spaces, supporting the revitalisation of the town centre and high street, and helping local organisations work together.

My proposal is that committee roles and the general administration of Rise Up Redruth would be voluntary. Individual projects could still pay artists, facilitators, tradespeople and other specialists fairly for their professional work.

These are only my starting ideas. The founding members would work together to agree the group’s aims, co-create and adopt its constitution, decide how it should operate and establish fair and transparent ways of making decisions.

I’m looking for people who may be interested in:

• helping shape the constitution and priorities
• joining the founding committee
• becoming Treasurer or Secretary
• becoming a member or project volunteer
• contributing ideas, experience or local knowledge

I am willing to put myself forward to serve as the first Chair, subject to the agreement of the founding members.

I’m currently pretty knee-deep in Lowender activity, so I’m planning to hold an initial meeting in early November. This gives us time to make sure that everyone who might be interested has the opportunity to hear about the idea and consider getting involved.

Expressing an interest does not commit you to taking on a formal role. If you would like to hear more, please complete this short form:

Dydh da,

Sorry, it’s been a bit of a bonkers summer, and somehow it’s September already!

I know we spoke about possible plans for this ugly monstrosity later this month, but I might have some good news. The roundabout is on the agenda for tomorrow’s Asset Management Committee meeting.

Cornwall Council is still keen to devolve maintenance of the roundabout to Redruth Town Council after giving it a good trim. Apparently, the training required to work on roundabouts, which we were previously told would be really expensive, is actually only £600 for the whole facilities team!?!?

It’s difficult to know exactly what will be agreed tomorrow. Even if the roundabout is devolved, decisions will still need to be made about the Flyer. If it is restored and returned to the roundabout, it will continue to make maintenance difficult, as it would undoubtedly need to be removed and put back each time work is carried out.

If you feel strongly about the roundabout, you’re welcome to speak during public participation at tomorrow’s meeting. It starts at 7pm at the Civic Centre, where the library is. Public participation is one of the first items on the agenda, although the debate about the roundabout itself is quite a long way down the agenda.

I’ll record the debate, so it’s completely up to you whether you stay for it or not.

What a day!

On Sunday, members of Rise Up Redruth joined people from Helston, Camborne, Newquay and across Cornwall for a visit to Nudge Community Builders on Union Street, Plymouth.

The day was packed with inspiration, honest conversations and practical ideas about how communities can come together to breathe new life into the places they care about. From community ownership and creative enterprise to volunteering and grassroots action, it was a reminder that real change happens when people work together.

One of the things we love most about Rise Up Redruth is that everyone is welcome. Whether you have an hour to spare, a skill you'd like to share, or simply an interest in seeing Redruth thrive, there are plenty of ways to get involved.

Over the coming months we'll be organising more Big Tidies, another Buttermarket Takeover, and a range of other opportunities to get involved in shaping the future of our town.

If you've been wondering how you can make a difference in Redruth, we'd love to hear from you. Every conversation, every pair of hands and every new idea helps.

This is just the beginning.

🌿 It's Gardening Club at The Ladder this Saturday!

I can't wait to see what they've got planned for us this month. The skip has gone, the new planters are looking lush, and the space is really starting to come together.

It's a lovely bunch of people too. Last month we had everyone from 4 to 80 getting stuck in. We always get loads done, then finish by sitting down together for a delicious lunch, courtesy of Beats & Roots Cafe.

If you've been thinking about coming along, why not give it a go? We'd love to see you! 🌼

What a fantastic start to the Big Tidy! 🧡

More than 20 people gave up just a couple of hours of their time this morning, collecting over 10 bags of rubbish. To be honest it felt like we were only just scratching the surface!

There's still a chance to get involved tomorrow, so if you can spare a couple of hours, we'd love to see you.

It was brilliant to meet new people, have a chat and do something positive together to help make our town that little bit tidier.

A huge thank you to all our volunteers, and to Berrymans Bakery Ltd keeping us fuelled with some very tasty cakes! 🍰

Guess where we've been this morning?

You might not be able to tell from the outside, but we've been tackling the overgrowth at the bottom of Station Hill. And let us tell you, there was a lot of it!

With just five of us and two hours of hard work, we've made a really good dent. We've already taken three dumpy bags to the tip, with another three bags and a huge pile still waiting to go.

We won't be defeated though. We'll be back next month to keep going!

If you fancy lending a hand next time, give us a shout. The more people we have, the more we can get done.

Following our visit from the incredibly inspirational Hannah Sloggett from Nudge Community Builders, we’re planning a trip to Plymouth to visit Union Street and see in person what they’ve achieved through community-led regeneration.

We’re currently looking at Saturday 18th July, with a coach picking up and dropping off in both Helston and Redruth. We’re aiming to keep ticket prices at around £15 return.

At the moment, we’re simply registering interest so we can get an idea of numbers and work out what size coach we’ll need.

If you’d be interested in coming along, please pop your details into the form linked in the comments 👇

Please also share with anyone you think might be interested.
