🎉 Redhill Community Win – Towers Plan Won’t Go Ahead!
The six-week period for the developer to challenge the Planning Inspector’s decision has now passed, so the proposed tower blocks at Redhill station will not be going ahead.
This was a true community effort: over 1,500 signed an initial petition, more than 2,000 residents and rail users across Redhill, Reigate and beyond formally objected, and hundreds of people helped RRAG raise over ÂŁ40,000 so our voice could be heard at the planning inquiry. Every pound was spent directly on the campaign. Huge thanks go to groups like The Reigate and Redhill Society, ERRA, Reigate, Redhill & District Rail Users' Association, Surrey Coalition of Disabled People and to everyone who supported us along the way.
We know Redhill needs more homes, but they need to be well designed and genuinely affordable for local people. The proposed scheme was five towers up to 15 storeys high with 255 small flats and no affordable housing. That simply wasn’t right for this important site, nor for Redhill.
The Planning Inspector agreed the scheme would cause serious harm, particularly because of its height, scale, and design on such a prominent gateway site, alongside accessibility concerns, particularly for disabled users and the negative impact on our townscape and heritage. She dismissed the appeal in January. Now that the legal challenge window has closed, the tower scheme has finally gone away.
A special thank you to everyone who donated, your support made it possible for the community’s voice to be heard at the inquiry.
Redhill should be proud, this was a real community effort. ❤️
The tower scheme has gone, but the station site will likely come forward again in future. We hope the next proposal is something that works for Redhill and the people who live here.
