Arabic dirham coins were widely used in Viking-age Europe and valued as high-quality silver. Abundant silver mining in the Middle East, along with the booming slave trade between Vikings and the Islamic world, brought large quantities of these coins into Europe.

Fake dirham coins made in Europe, like this coin brooch, did exist. About 5โ€“10% of Arabic coins found in Viking graves are replicas (Kindtler-Nielsen, 2023).

Obverse: Within an oval, soldiers take an oath before France, who sits on a pedestal holding a tablet engraved with the Rights of Man. The French Revolution's motto, "VIVRE LIBRES OU MOURIR" ("Live free or die"), is inscribed outside the oval.

Reverse: Around the edge: "MONNERON FRERES NEGOCIANS A PARIS 1792" ("Monneron Brothers, Merchants in Paris"). A nine-line legend states the tokenโ€™s value and its exchange for assignats (currency) of 50 livres and lower, along with the Republic's dateโ€”Year 4.
