Arabic dirham coins were widely used in Viking-age Europe and valued as high-quality silver. Abundant silver mining in the Middle East, along with the booming slave trade between Vikings and the Islamic world, brought large quantities of these coins into Europe.
Fake dirham coins made in Europe, like this coin brooch, did exist. About 5โ10% of Arabic coins found in Viking graves are replicas (Kindtler-Nielsen, 2023).
