Looking to volunteer, and to make a big difference to someone's life?

The Wokingham Link Visiting Scheme is a charity dedicated to reducing the serious impact of loneliness in Wokingham Borough. They believe the best way to do that is through friendship and helping people feel connected to their community.

They need volunteers to enhance the lives of those experiencing loneliness and isolation by making regular home visits. If you can give 1-2 hours per week or per fortnight, to be that friendly face and listening ear, they'll make sure you’ve got all the support and training you need and answer any questions you might have along the way.

For more information on how to become a volunteer, visit their website https://www.linkvisiting.org/

Crowthorne Community Minibus provides a transport service to the elderly and disabled in the local community. A key part of what they do relies on a bespoke web-based system that coordinates passengers, drivers, venues and trips — ensuring these are run in the most cost and time efficient way for passengers and volunteer drivers.

They are looking for a volunteer developer to help keep this vital system running smoothly. This is a maintenance and bug-fixing role — no big projects, just making sure things work reliably for the team and the people they serve.

What it involves
– Investigating and fixing bugs as they arise
– Making small tweaks and improvements to keep the system stable
– Occasionally advising on simple technical questions

Skills they are looking for
– Solid experience with PHP and MySQL
– Comfortable reading and working with existing codebases
– Good problem-solving skills
– Reliable and able to communicate in plain English with a non-technical team

Time commitment is just a few hours a month at a time to suit. Some months may need nothing at all; others might need a quick fix!

Mostly remote work, with occasional check-ins by phone or video call.

If this sounds like something you’d like to get involved with, then please contact Richard Skilton at [email protected] with a little about your experience.

"If you want to live in a community that looks after people, you've got to be a part of that..."

As part of Volunteers' Week, we spoke to Ted, one of our volunteer Trustees, about his volunteering experience and why it fits so well with his passion for community.

Thank you Ted, it's great to have you on board as part of the team.

This is Helena, our Volunteer Services Manager, who had a busy morning on Tuesday chatting to lots of people who popped in to chat about volunteering opportunities.

It was a successful morning, with people signing up as drivers and talking about other opportunities with us, and with other Wokingham Borough-based charities who are looking for volunteers.

Thanks so much to all those who came to see us, and thank you also to all our brilliant volunteers; the drivers, the Green 'n' Tidy gardeners, and anyone else who volunteers for us. We couldn't do what we do without you!

Missed the coffee morning but want to find out more?

It's also the perfect time to consider whether you'd be interested in any opportunities to give something back to your local community.

Volunteering is proven to be good for our own wellbeing. Getting involved and making a positive difference can be a very rewarding experience.
