๐Ÿ’œ A Little Kindness Goes a Long Way ๐Ÿ’œ

A smile, a phone call, or a quick visit can make a real difference to someone's day.

Many older people in our community value staying connected, and small acts of kindness help to reduce loneliness and build stronger neighbourhoods.

Why not take a moment over the weekend to:
๐Ÿ’œ Check in on a friend or neighbour
โ˜• Share a cup of tea and a chat (and maybe a cheeky slice of cake! ๐Ÿฐ)
๐Ÿ“ž Give someone a call just to say hello

Together, we can help make Reading a more connected and caring community.

๐ŸŽ Last week at our MCST Dementia Clubs, we celebrated Dementia Action Week 2026 with a very special session ๐Ÿ’œ

For the final part of the clubs, we invited family members and carers to come along and join in the fun alongside our clients. Together, we enjoyed plenty of laughter with some friendly horse racing games, followed by a โ€œReady Steady Cookโ€ style activity where our mystery horse deliveries included stock cubes, an onion and a carrot! ๐Ÿฅ•๐Ÿง…

There were lots of brilliant ideas shared for what everyone would make, from soups and stews to shepherdโ€™s pie and pasta sauces ๐Ÿฒ (Although maybe not soup in this heatwave! โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜„)

It was wonderful to see everyone chatting, laughing, and spending time together before finishing the afternoon with delicious cake and a cuppa as a group โ˜•๐Ÿฐ

A huge thank you to all the family members and carers who came along and made the afternoon so special ๐Ÿ’œ

A special shout out to Sam, Store Manager at M&S Woodley Foodhall, for kindly donating the cakes for the sessions all week - they went down a treat! Thank you to Sam and all her team at Woodley for your support ๐Ÿ’œ M&S Woodley

โ˜€๏ธ Staying cool isnโ€™t just about comfort, itโ€™s about staying safe. Check in on loved ones, keep hydrated, and take extra care in the heat this week ๐Ÿ’œ

Here are some simple ways to stay safe during hot weather:

๐Ÿ’ง Drink plenty of water throughout the day
๐Ÿ  Keep curtains and blinds closed during the hottest hours
๐Ÿ‘• Wear light, loose-fitting clothing
๐ŸŒค Avoid going out between 11am - 3pm where possible
๐Ÿฅ— Eat cold meals and snacks where you can
๐Ÿงด Donโ€™t forget sunscreen and a hat outdoors
๐Ÿ“ž Check in on older neighbours, friends, and relatives

Please also be aware of the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke and seek help if someone becomes confused, dizzy, unusually tired, or unwell.

You can keep up to date with weather warnings and heat health alerts via the Met Office.

๐Ÿ’™ Supporting people living with dementia in Reading ๐Ÿ’™

As part of Dementia Action Week, weโ€™re highlighting the importance of connection, support and community for people living with dementia and their loved ones.

Our MCST (Maintenance Cognitive Stimulation Therapy) dementia clubs provide a safe, welcoming space for people with mild-to-moderate dementia to stay active, social and connected.

Through group activities, conversation, games and shared experiences, MCST helps support memory, confidence and wellbeing, while also giving carers and family members valuable respite and peace of mind.

Delivered by our trained facilitators across Reading, these sessions are about much more than activities, theyโ€™re about friendship, laughter, support and helping older people feel less isolated.

A huge thank you to all our staff, volunteers and supporters who help make this possible every day ๐Ÿ’œ

If youโ€™d like to find out more, support our work through volunteering, or get involved with our dementia clubs, weโ€™d love to hear from you.
